Tom Fitzgerald has been named to the newly-created role of Assistant to the General Manager and Dan MacKinnon has been promoted to Director of Player Personnel, it was announced today by Pittsburgh Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Fitzgerald, who joined the Penguins as director of player development in 2007 and served as an assistant coach for the 2009 Stanley Cup champions, will oversee the development of all prospects in the organization as well as working with Penguins players at the NHL level. Fitzgerald brings extensive experience to the position, having played more than 1,000 NHL games in 17 seasons with the New York Islanders, Florida, Colorado, Nashville, Chicago, Toronto and Boston.

He will monitor the progress of Penguins prospects in junior hockey, college, Europe and with the club’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He also will advise Shero on personnel decisions.

“Tom is an extremely valuable member of the Penguins organization and this new role will capitalize on his ability to deal with young players throughout our system.” Shero said. “We gave him the opportunity to return as an assistant coach, but Tom wanted to enable his wife and four children to continue to live in Boston, and he expressed a strong interest in working in the front office. He’ll work closely with me and Assistant GM Jason Botterill and will be a go-to guy in a lot of areas.”

Head Coach Dan Bylsma will look to hire an assistant coach to replace Fitzgerald on the staff.

MacKinnon, meanwhile, becomes Director of Player Personnel and will oversee all aspects of the Penguins’ professional scouting operation in North America and Europe. He also will work closely with Director of Amateur Scouting Jay Heinbuck to ensure that the Penguins have a comprehensive scouting network at all levels of hockey. MacKinnon will be entering his fourth season with the Penguins after spending six years in the scouting department of the Nashville Predators.
