For the second time this year, Robert Morris University will battle a Penguins draft pick.
The Colonials close a two-game home set at the RMU Island Sports Center against Bemidji State on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in College Hockey America conference action. RMU won the first battle, 4-2, on Friday.
Chris Peluso, the Penguins’ 2004 seventh-round pick (194th overall), is a freshman defender for Bemidji State. He has six assists and 22 penalty minutes in 21 games for the Beavers (13-10-4 overall), who lead the CHA with an 8-3-4 mark in the conference.
Robert Morris (12-13-1) is third in the conference with an 8-7-0 record. The Colonials went 3-0 last week, beating Princeton on the road before sweeping a College Hockey America series with then No. 16 Niagara to end the week. The Colonials outscored the Purple Eagles, 14-3 (7-1, 5-2), Friday and Saturday.
That effort led College Hockey News, a Web site devoted to college hockey, to name the Robert Morris as their team of the week. It’s the first time in the team’s two-plus seasons that have earned such an honor, wrapping up a week full of accolades for the Colonials.
In addition to the College Hockey News award, junior forward Sean Berkstresser, an Apollo native, was the InsideCollegeHockey.com National Player of the Week and the CHA Co-Offensive Player of the Week. The junior doubled his point total for the year last week with seven points in three games. He now has 14 points on four goals and 10 assists. The junior tied the team-record with four points in Friday’s 7-1 win over Niagara. He added a goal and an assist versus Princeton and another assist in Saturday’s rematch with the Purple Eagles.
Junior defenseman and co-captain Rob Cowan also got in on the act earning the CHA Defensive Player of the Week award. Cowan had three points on a goal and two assists. His only goal was a length of the ice empty-netter on an assist from his younger brother, Rob Cowan to cap the scoring in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Niagara. The brother-to-brother connection was the first ever for the Colonials. The junior added an assist in each of the Niagara games as well.
