Quote Round-Up

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
Below is a compilation of the Penguins' postgame comments following their 4-3 shootout defeat to the Ottawa Senators.

Dan Bylsma

On the game
In the Columbus game, we had a better feeling that we could come back and have a great third period. Here you feel like you gain a point and you feel like you leave one out there. We had a 3-1 lead, but I still didn’t feel like we were playing the way we needed to play. The power play was a big point in the game where we could have made it 4-1 and probably ended the game, but we gave them a chance to get back in it and tie it up 3-3.

On Fleury's performance in overtime
Marc-Andre Fleury did all the talking. That was unbelievable by him. A Couple of great saves. Four-on-three is a difficult situation for the PK and they did execute. They had a full two minutes and Fleury made some great saves and our penalty killers were outstanding. Unfortunately for us, our guys got stuck on the ice and couldn’t get off the ice in, what looked like a power play for a lot longer then the two minutes. But a great job by the PK and a few huge saves from Marc-Andre.

On Mathieu Garon starting against Boston
The plan is to come back with Mathieu (Sunday), yeah.

On what went wrong
Puck management for 60 minutes. I think the strength of our team over the last 12 games is that we have been able to force teams to go back under pressure, whether it’s with the rush and with the puck or forcing them to turn around and play. Today for too much of the game we didn’t force their defense to go back. They did a good job of standing up, and when you do that, you have to make their defense turn and go back. We didn’t do enough of that. That leaves the game open to become 50-50, and that’s what it was. It turned out to be a 50-50 game and we lost a point in the shootout.

Sidney Crosby

On dropping a point in the shootout loss
It would have been nice to get that one, but as a whole in the third we didn’t give ourselves a really good chance. We got away from our game a bit. We didn’t finish it up when we had the chance and fell in the shootout. I thought we did a pretty good job at some points in the third, but we’re not going to complain. We got one point, two would be much better, but we can’t really dwell on this right now. We have to make sure that we maintain our game and play well back to back.

On what went wrong
Just a couple of mistakes. I don’t think we were awful, but we made a couple of mistakes, and you can’t afford to do that, especially this time of year when you make one mistake and the puck is in your net.

Sergei Gonchar

On improving the power play
We have to simplify our power play and put more pucks on the net and have a good presence up front, and I’m the guy that has to shoot the puck more.

Marc-Andre Fleury

On surrendering a point
We needed those points for sure. We were at 3-1 and like Sergei (Gonchar) said, (we were) undisciplined and maybe they passed us, and we were unable to come back to it.

On bouncing back against Boston
It will be a good game (Sunday). Boston has a really good team and it will be a good chance for us to try and get some points to climb in the standings.
