Quarterfinals Wrapup

Today concluded the quarterfinals action. Finland topped Russia, 3-1, USA defeated Czech Republic, 5-2, and Canada beat Latvia, 2-1, as several Pens Olympians move on to semifinals action - and in the case of Canada-USA against each other.

12 p.m. - USA vs. Canada

Oh the drama.

Evgeni Malkin's dream of winning Olympic gold on his home soil came to an end Wednesday at the hands of Pens teammates Jussi Jokinen and Olli Maatta as Finland secured a 3-1 win against Russia to advance to the semifinals against Sweden.

Teemu Selanne and Mikael Granlund each posted one goal and one assist and Juhamatti Aaltonen scored a goal for Finland. Goaltender Tuukka Rask made 37 saves between the pipes. Maatta and Jokinen each notched one shot.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the lone Russian goal. Malkin recorded four shots in the game. Seymon Varlamov surrendered three goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky.

Finland and Sweden will play Friday.

The United States mounted a 4-1 lead halfway through the second period and coasted to a 5-2 victory against the Czech Republic to advance to the semifinal round.

Five different players scored for America: James van Riemsdyk; Dustin Brown; David Backes; Zach Parise; and Phil Kessel. Ryan Suter had three assists and Ryan Kesler notched two assists. Backes also had an assist for a two-point game. Jonathan Quick made 21 saves.

Paul Martin had one shot and a plus-1 rating. Brooks Orpik had one shot and two penalty minutes.

Ales Hemsky scored both goals for the Czechs.

It took a late goal from defenseman Shea Weber to lift Canada over Latvia, 2-1, and into the semifinals. It was Weber's third goal of the Olympics.

Patrick Sharp scored the game's first goal. But Lauris Darzins scored on a breakaway to even the score. It remained 1-1 until Weber's goal at 13:06 of the third period.

The star of the game was Latvia goalie Kristers Gudlevskis, who made 55 saves in the loss.

Sidney Crosby had one shot and an even rating. Chris Kunitz had two shots and an even rating.
