Pittsburgh Natives Johns, Saad Earn Spots On U.S. Under-18 Squad

The United States Men’s National Under-18 Team announced their 22-man roster for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship April 13-23 in Minsk and Bobruisk, Belarus.

Two players with connections to Pittsburgh made the final cut. Defenseman Stephen Johns (Wampum, Pa.) and forward Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) will try to help the Americans defend the gold medal earned by the team during the 2009 tournament in Fargo, N.D.

Johns and Saad are both members of the United State National Team Development Program Under-18 squad which competes in the United States Hockey League.

Johns finished the regular season with eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-12 rating in 23 games.

Saad ranked third on the team during the regular season with 26 points (12G-14A) in 24 contests, while his 12 goals were second-most.

The U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team will open tournament play against Sweden on April 13 at noon.
