When the puck drops at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, April 15, at Mellon Arena, it will be a different kind of playoff-watching party for dozens of hockey fans as they gather to not only celebrate the start of National Hockey League playoffs, but also the city’s inaugural NHLTweetup, officially sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Robinson Town Centre T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant, the event will give attendees the opportunity to watch the game, socialize, and win signed memorabilia and prizes donated by the Penguins, National Hockey League, and other local sponsors.
Pittsburgh joins more than 20 cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe in creating an official social meet-up for hockey fans who use Twitter, a popular social-messaging platform. Attendees are encouraged to “tweet” from their respective events, sharing their thoughts on the game(s) and user-generated media in real time. While some NHLTweetups are still in the planning stages, most cities will host their first-round playoff parties simultaneously this Wednesday to coincide with the league’s opening night matchups.
