Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux and UPMC CEO and President Jeffrey A. Romoff were part of a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday at the future site of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township.
The facility is scheduled to open in the summer of 2015. In addition to serving as the Penguins' practice rink, it will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention.
With two sheets of ice, the complex will host the Penguins Elite youth hockey program and youth camps and clinics, as well as high school and amateur games. It also will be available for community events.
