Pens-Panthers In-Game Blog

by Sam Kasan / Pittsburgh Penguins

Panthers 3, Pens 2

0:00: The Pens go down swinging. Attacked the net something fierce, but couldn't get that goal. Somehow the Panthers escaped.

2:04: Kunitz with a shot from the side of the net, but the puck goes wide.

3:30: It appears that Weiss scores. The puck hit his foot, hit the post and off Johnson's arm into the net. The refs reviewing it. They rule it good. Panthers 3, Pens 2.

3:55: Pens caught with too many men on the ice. They'll have to kill a penalty.

4:22: Crazy scramble in front of the net. Theodore was down for 10 seconds, but the Pens can't find a way to get the puck in.

5:07: Malkin tried to score on a re-direct from in front of the net, but had his stick tied up.

7:44: WHAT A SAVE!!! Johnson with a split pad save on Versteeg at the side of the net.

15:11: The Pens get a couple of chances, including some one-timers from Malkin. But they can't score and the penalty expires.

17:12: I agree with Bob Errey. I have not idea how the puck does not cross the goal line. There was a scramble in the crease and the net was dislodged. A power play coming for Pittsburgh.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. Third period underway.

- Staal has a goal and is 10-5 in faceoffs (67%)
- Vitale is 5-1 in faceoffs (83%)
- Dupuis has 2 assists

0:00: The second period ends with the game tied at 2-2. Staal gets on the board for Pittsburgh.

0:20: Both teams come close to scoring in the final minute. Each come very close to netting a goal.

5:23: The Pens' goal has really inspired the club. They've been coming hard at the Florida net and causing havok. The Panthers are lucky the Pens haven't converted.

7:22: The Pens tie the game on a goal from Jordan Staal!!! He found a loose puck in the slot and waited for Theodore to drop to the ice before lifting a shot into the netting. Pens 2, Panthers 2.

10:28: A puck dangerously sneaks on the Pittsburgh net on a broken play. Johnson alertly makes the save with his pad.

14:12: Fleischmann finds a loose puck in the slot and buries a shot through traffic to give Florida the lead. Panthers 2, Pens 1.

14:48: The Pens had a great 2-on-1. Kunitz made a late pass, but Dupuis couldn't get the shot on net.

15:10: Campbell with a great chance in the high slot, but Johnson makes the stop.

16:22: Johnson makes a great save off a 2-on-1 chance. The attempted pass hit Martin's stick and went on net. Johnson had to be alert to make the stop.

18:47: Good cross-ice pass from Malkin to Neal. His one-timer was stopped by Theodore.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. Second period underway.

- Orpik has 3 hits
- Pens trailing in faceoff (9-12, 43%)
- Pens are 7-0-3 when scoring first

0:00: The first period comes to an end with the game tied at 1-1. Kunitz scoring for Pitt and Campbell for Florida. Panthers have the edge in shots, 10-7.

1:19: Pens kill off the Martin penalty. Another successful kill.

3:19: Martin gets called for slashing. So the Pens are right back on the penalty kill.

(House convo: We are talking about the return of Beavis and Butthead. I'm not a fan. Apparently, I'm in the minority in the room.)

3:44: The penalty expires and the Pens get the kill.

5:44: Park is going to get called for tripping and the Pens PKers will go to work.

6:19: Johnson with a solid pad save on a wraparound chance by the Panthers.

8:14: Cooke gets in all alone on goal for a breakaway. He went to the backhand, but Theodore closed hte pads.

(House convo: Mountain is now complaining that when we played football as kids that Jimmy B punched when he tackled. See a trend? Mountain can't hang with the tough boys. #weak).

9:12: Staal showing great speed, carrying the puck down the far side and gets off a shot that Theodore stops.

(House convo: We're talking about our old hockey games against each other as kids. Mountain is complaining about when I lit him up with a check. Jesus chimed in with a game where he and I almost came to blows in a game. That's my game. I play with an edge and can be borderline dirty).

12:26: Campbell takes a pass in the slot and makes a move on Johnson to stuff the puck in. Pens 1, Panthers 1.

15:06: Johnson with a great glove save on Weiss.

15:40: Kunitz has a lot of jump right now. Obviously he's trying to impress Marvin Kunitz.

18:51: The Pens strike early off a faceoff loss in the neutral zone. Kunitz intercepted a pass and dished to Dupuis. He put the puck on net while Kunitz charged ahead. Kunitz re-directed the shot through the pads of Jose Theodore. Pens 1, Panthers 0.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. First period underway.

6:30 PM:
It’s a hockey night in Pittsburgh!! Tonight the Pens will take on the Florida Panthers at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

Tonight is the final game of the Dads’ Trip. The Pens are looking to make it a 1-1 trip after dropping Thursday’s contest, 4-1, in Tampa Bay.

I'm live blogging this game from the couch and Jimmy B and Jesus' apartment.

Tonight's blogging lineup at the apartment:
Jimmy B, Jesus, Mountain (yes, his nickname is Mountain; yes, he gave himself that nickname; yes, it is ridiculous), Lori, Amy, Ashley and Danielle.

My friend Dave will be a game-time decision

Since this is the finale to the Dads’ Trip, we’ll open the game blog with one final father-son inspired video. One of the most heartfelt and beautiful songs I’ve ever heard was written in the wake of tragedy.

Eric Clapton penned “Tears in Heaven” after his young son died after falling out of a window. The pain, torture, anguish really comes through in the song, as does his love, tenderness and vulnerability.

So to wrap up the Dads’ Trip, we’ll start with “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton. Enjoy.
