Pens-Jets In-Game Blog

by Sam Kasan / Pittsburgh Penguins

Penguins 4, Jets 1

0:00: Horn sounds and the game is over. Pens pull out the victory.

5:02: Congratulations to Sullivan, who recorded an assist in the game for his 700th career NHL point.

15:06: Dupuis won a foot race to a loose puck dumped into the offensive zone. Dupuis didn't even settle the puck. He snapped an immediate shot stick side on Pavelec for a score 40 seconds after the last goal. Pens 4, Jets 1

15:46: Byfuglien took a penalty for interfering with Fleury. On the ensuing power play, Kunitz made a centering pass to Staal in the slot. Staal snapped his wrist and went top corner for the PP score. Pens 3, Jets 1

19:38: Malkin made a diving pass to Neal in the slot. Neal buried a shot just 22 seconds into the period to give Pittsburgh the lead. Pens 2, Jets 1

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. 3rd period underway. Check out coach Bylsma's Christmas sweater he wore under his jacket. He promised the team if they beat Chicago he would wear the sweater tonight. True to his word, there it is.

- Kunitz with team-high 4 shots
- Adams & Staal dishing out 3 hits each
- Niskanen with team-best 15:56 minutes

0:00: After 40 minutes we've got a 1-1 game with Burmistrove geting the tying goal in the second frame.

1:00: Power play is over. Full strength. And one minutes left in the period.

3:02: Sullivan with some sick moves through the offensive zone to draw a penalty and get off a great shot. Pens power play will get to work.

5:04: The Pens kill off the penalty. Back to 5-on-5. Great stuff from Adams along the boards, doing the dirty work.

7:12: Sullivan got a breakaway but his shot was stopped by Pavelec. Then he took a tripping penalty. Pens PK will get after it.

10:49: Blake Wheeler with a beautiful pass through the slot to Burmistrov in the backdoor. Burmistrov buried it on a one-timer for the score. Pens 1, Jets 1

13:52: Kunitz and Malkin had a 2-on-1 break. Kunitz carried the puck, kept and shot. Pavelec made a pad save and cleared away the rebound.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. 2nd period underway

- Vitale scores his 2nd goal of the year
- Pittsburgh outshooting Winnipeg, 14-5
- Michalek logged 6:25 in ice time

0:00: The period ended with Pittsburgh leading 1-0 on Vitale's goal. The Pens are outshooting the Jets 14-5.

1:58: The Jets used a turnover to get a 2-on-1, but Ladd's shot at an open net with Fleury sprawling sailed wide.

4:44: The Pens tapped their sticks on the boards as Asham is let out of the box following his 5-minute fighting penalty. Great work from Asham to fire up his trooops and his teammates appreciate his effort.

6:01: Pens use an offensive zone faceoff to break the 0-0 game. Picard gets the puck on net from the point. Vitale finds a rebound and shows some soft hands to lift it into the netting. Pens 1, Jets 0

8:55: The Jets are crashing the net hard. Had a lot of good offensive zone time. They did this last night to Montreal and tormented them. Fleury snuffs out a great chance from the slot with an obscene glove save.

10:23: Pens kill the penalty and then Asham drops the gloves for a good bout with Glass. Both men will serve 5 minutes.

12:44: There was an icing call coming against Winnipeg. The puck bounced off the boards and through the crease. Ladd got a pointblank shot, but Fleury made a masterful save to keep it out of the net. Fleury took a tripping penalty and the Pens are shorthanded.

14:32: Slater got a shorthanded breakaway and put a shot off the crossbar. The penalty expired and both teams are at full strength.

16:12: Cooke went for a check into Antropov. The Jet put his arms up and elbowed Cooke in the head. Cooke was down, but was able to get to his feet and head to the locker room. Pens on the PP.

16:54: Malkin got off a diving shot on net and Kunitz crashed hard looking for a rebound.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on. 1st period underway at MTS Centre.

Pens lines tonight:

Fleury in net. Pavelec goes for the Jets.

Pens defenseman Zbynek Michalek will be in the lineup tonight!!!!

We are a half hour away from puck drop at MTS Centre. The Pens will be without Deryk Engelland, who is serving a 3-game suspension. The team recalled defenseman Brian Strait from WBS, but hasn't ruled out using Zbynek Michalek, who was removed from IR this afternoon.

For all the details from this morning's developments, check out the Pens Report.

While killing time at the rink this afternoon I came across this video tribute from a fan. It's pretty well put together, plus it features the song "Wheels" by Foo Fighters. Not only are the lyrics appropriate for the Jets situation, but the metaphor of a plane landing is too perfect to not use. Plus, it's by the Foo Fighters. Great band.
