Pens-Devils In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

Attention fans: Due to technical difficulties with our server, we were not able to log back into the NHL's Content Management System to pick up the blog after it went down in the second intermission. We sincerely apologize for this! -MC

5:00: Flower goes to play the puck behind the net and gets tangled with a couple of Devils players. Luckily the Pens were able to clear the puck.

7:04: Pens get to regroup and get a needed faceoff in the Devils defensive zone.

13:15: Devils have been controlling the play these past few minutes. They already have seven shots during this period and Fleury has had to come up with a few big saves.

18:00: My talented intern Kaitlin Zurawsky will now be taking over the game blog for the first time. Happy reading!

20:00: Puck drops to start the second. Game on!

- Tanger leads the Pens with 8:17 minutes played
- Jordan Staal's next goal will be the 100th of his career
- The Pens have now scored the opening goal in seven of their first 10 games

0:00: That'll do it for the first. Pens lead 1-0 on a goal from Staalsy (his fourth of the year). The Devils have a 10-9 advantage in shots.

4:20: Adam Henrique cuts through the Pens D and goes in alone on Fleury, who stones him with the very end of his left pad!!! That was a stretch if I ever saw one!

5:25: The video board just recognized Steve Sullivan for playing his 900th career NHL game. The crowd acknowledges the huge feat with a loud chorus of cheers. Congrats Sully!!!

7:13: As my colleague Sam Kasan just tweeted, the Big Mac Drought of 2011-12 continues... sigh.

9:13: The Big Mac Attack is early tonight!!! It starts now.

10:00: Devils made it out of that one unscathed.

12:08: New Devils captain Zach Parise wrestles Kunitz to the ground, and he's going to be penalized for it. Pens back to the PP!

13:53: And the Pens convert! Cooke (behind the net) and Park (on the half wall) make a few passes back and forth before Park calmly sends a pass right to Staal's wheelhouse. He rips a one-timer from the slot that deflects off Anton Volechenkov's outstretched stick and into the net! Pens 1, Devils 0

14:29: Devils D man Bryce Salvador just left the ice and went down to the locker room. Not sure what happened there. And now the Pens are on the PP as Clarkson goes to the box for hi-sticking Fleury!

16:47: Now it's the Devils' turn to get a good scoring chance, as Zubrus gets a couple of cracks on the doorstep but Fleury gets a pad out to stifle his attempt!

17:49: Cooke gets some time and space to wind up for a shot in the offensive zone. Hedberg turns his shot aside and Asham goes in for the rebound, but whiffs on the attempt! Vitale can't get a handle on it either.

20:00: Puck drops. Game on!

7:00 PM:
It's official: Ben Lovejoy is scratched tonight. Deryk Engelland will be in the lineup. Mark Letestu and Evgeni Malkin are the other scratches. Here are the official combinations:

Fleury between the pipes.

6:30 PM:
It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! The Pens are currently preparing to take on the New Jersey Devils for their first intra-division match of the season. This is the first of six meetings between the two teams.

The news out of Pittsburgh this morning is that Evgeni Malkin will not play tonight and Tyler Kennedy needs to progress to be symptom free before he can go any further. The six defensemen who dress will be a game-time decision, so stay tuned to the blog to find out who plays!

Meanwhile, former Penguin Johan Hedberg will start between the pipes for the Devils even though they played last night as Martin Brodeur is rehabbing a shoulder injury. I have the full breakdown on the Devils here, but you can see a summarized version in video form here!:
