Pens-'Canes In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

0:00: And we're going to the shootout.

2:22: 'Canes swarm the net again and Fleury barely kicks the puck out of danger with his toe! Having a heart attack over here...

2:49: Sutter drives to the net but his shot is turned aside by Fleury!

5:00: Teams will skate 4-on-4 for the extra period. Game on!

0:00: And we're going to OT here at CONSOL Energy Center!!!

2:42: Pens buzzing and buzzing in the 'Canes zone but just can't solve Ward. He's standing on his head right now.

5:20: Skinner back on the ice for Carolina.

8:22: Harrison's shot from the point slips past Fleury...but luckily dribbles just outside the post and not into the back of the net! Phew!

9:46: Things really starting to heat up as Vitale and Tim Brent drop the gloves in front of the 'Canes net. Vitale heads to the locker room after the bout is finished.

10:46: Pens thwart that 'Canes PP and they're back to full strength. The whistle blows and tempers flare by Carolina's net with Orpik and Allen jawing at each other.

12:59: Orpik lines up Skinner just after the 'Canes forward pokes the puck forward and absolutely drills him with a shoulder-to-shoulder hit! But for some reason, Orpik is going to the box for interference and Skinner heads to the dressing room after he is slow to get up. Skinner smashes his stick in frustration as he goes down the runway. Pens to the PK.

15:30: Another penalty successfully killed by the Pens as Jeffrey exits the sin bin.

17:31: TK streaks down the ice and drops a pass to Dupuis, whose wrister is lost in net-front traffic as Jeffrey collides with Ward and is going to the box for it. Pens to the PK.

19:09: Martin out of the box. Pens successfully kill off the penalty.

20:00: Puck drops to start the third. Game on!

- Martin's assist on Malkin's goal was his 200th career NHL point
- Dupuis leads with 5 shots while Neal is right behind him with 4
- Pens outhitting 'Canes 20-16. Vitale has 4

0:00: Period ends with a huge save from Fleury! Teams still tied 1-1. Pens will start the third with 51 seconds left on their PK.

1:10: Martin gets called for tripping as the period winds down. Time for Carolina to try their hand at the PP.

5:23: Sutter grabs a turnover in his own zone and embarks on a breakaway, but he doesn't get much mustard on it and Fleury's there to turn it aside. This came just under a minute after Skinner had a point-blank chance smack dab in the center of the slot.

6:55: Dupuis just misses the net on a back door pass! I'm picking him as the next Pen to score with the way he's playing tonight.

10:40: Engo breaks a pretty pass off the boards to Tangradi on the far blue line, who goes to the net and slides a pass over to TK. His wrister rings off the inside of the far post and out! So close!

13:30: Dupuis having an unreal game so far tonight. He's using his trademark speed and tenacity to his full advantage and already has five shots on Ward.

15:12: Pens can't get anything going on that PP. 'Canes get back to full strength.

17:12: And the first PP of the night is being awarded to the Pens as Ponikarovsky is called for goalie interference! First unit: Kunitz, Neal, Malkin, Sullivan and Niskanen.

19:02: Great vision by Geno to find Paul Martin sneaking in down low. The Pens D-man has an open net as Ward is caught out of position, but he can't direct it in! Great chance there for Pauly!

20:00: Puck drops to start the on!

- Tonight is Tyler Kennedy's 300th NHL game
- There were no power plays for either team in that period
- With the goal, Malkin is now tied for the league lead in points (52) with Vancouver's Henrik Sedin

0:00: That'll do it for the first! Teams are tied 1-1 on goals from Malkin and McBain. Pens have a 13-10 advantage in shots.

1:22: Malkin strips Staal of the puck on a clearing attempt by the half wall, carries to the net and lifts one short side past Ward! PENS 1, 'CANES 1

5:17: Ridicul-awesome save by Fleury just now. Tlusty made a sick behind-the-back pass to Ruutu on the back door, but 'Flower' stoned him with the pad! Fans erupt with a "Fleury! Fleury!" chant after the sick stop!

6:18: Sullivan and Jokinen start chirping at each other after the whistle. Everyone on the ice converges and the result is Engelland going toe-to-toe with Tim Gleason. They were trading blows hard and fast...I honestly haven't seen a fight like that in a while. Crowd is revved afterward.

9:16: Neither team has been able to gain much offensive zone time thus far. Lot of play around the blue line and in the neutral zone.

11:57: Neal nearly finishes a shift off with a home-run stretch pass to Geno, but Faulk is able to get a stick on it and deflect it out of play. Lots of back-and-forth here.

14:53: Good shift just now by the Dupuis-Jeffrey-Kennedy line. Sustained pressure and a couple of quality shots on goal. I like it.

16:23: McBain just seems to torture the Pens when he plays them, as the D-man now has four goals and seven points in 9 career games vs. Pittsburgh.

17:49: Defenseman Jamie McBain pinches deep into the slot to grab a loose puck that he wrists past Fleury for the score. 'CANES 1, PENS 0

20:00: Puck drops to start the first. Game on!!!

7:00 PM:
Pens scratch Asham. 'Canes scratch LaRose, Spacek and Samsen.

Official lines:

Fleury in goal. Ward in net for Carolina.

6:30 PM:
Hello everyone! It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh for the first time in a week. In those 7 days since the team last played here at CONSOL Energy Center, the Pens hit the road for three games and it turned out to be an absolutely insane time. Sam recapped the trip's events here if you're unaware of what went on.

But after a magical weekend where the Pens have strung together two straight wins after losing six straight, it's time to get back to business. As James Neal put ever so fittingly...

A few additional notes: Kris Letang joined his teammates for practice this morning for the first time in nearly two months and Arron Asham isn't feeling well and isn't expected to play tonight. You can find all of the game day coverage at the Pens Report.

My good buddy Darren emailed me a song last week he'd thought I'd might like to use in the blog, and he was absolutely right. Not only is this a catchy techno jam, but they sample the same chorus that Flo Rida uses in his "Good Feeling" song...which is what the team blasted in the locker room when they snapped their six-game losing streak Jan. 13 in Florida. Check it out!
