Penguins-Thrashers In-Game Blog

by Sam Kasan / Pittsburgh Penguins

0:00: That's it from Atlanta. Pens win 4-2. Geno gets his 7th career hat trick and first since Jan. 19, 2010 against NYI. See you back in Pittsburgh.

1:02: Malkin glides in the empty-netter and seals the win for Pittsburgh. Penguins 4, Thrashers 2.

1:27: The Thrashers pull Pavelec. Extra attacker on.

2:21: Just got back to the press room. That is a long walk from the press box. It's always interesting listening to the crowd reaction from the underbelly of an arena.

7:24: Malkin nearly had the hat trick. His quick one-timer was sticked away by Pavelec.

9:15: The Thrashers cut into the Pittsburgh lead as Bergfors took a pass right in front of the net a slid the puck through Fleury's five-hole. Penguins 3, Thrashers 2.

13:08: Modin will not return to the game with an upper-body injury.

15:18: The Penguins strike on the power play to add to their lead. A Martin slap shot from the near point went off the backboards, but didn't roll around the net. Pavelec moved off his post. Malkin found the puck and quickly took advantage of the odd puck bounce for his second tally of the night. Penguins 3, Thrashers 1.

17:19: The Penguins grab their first lead of the game thanks to their captain. Engelland took a slap shot from the midpoint. Crosby, right in front of the net, tipped the puck through the arm of Pavelec. Penguins 2, Thrashers 1.

17:47: Pittsburgh won a faceoff in their own zone so hard that it was practically a shot on Fleury. The netminder alertly pushed the puck aside.

18:19: Pittsburgh gets a great shorthanded chance. After a slap shot on goal, Alex Goligoski crashed the net hard and force Pavelec to cover the puck. The Pens kill off the penalty.

18:49: There was a scramble for a loose puck in the Pens crease, but Fleury smothers the rubber.

20:00: All even after 40 minutes. Time to drop the puck for the final frame. Pittsburgh still has 1:57 to kill on their current penalty.

- Malkin scored his 5th goal of the season
- The Pens have blocked 11 shots, led by Letang and Michalek with 3 each
- Adams has a team-high four hits

0:00: The period comes to an end with the game tied, 1-1. Atlanta is outshooting Pittsburgh, 19-17.

0:02: Lots of fights as the period comes to an end. It all starts with Orpik hip checking Antropov. Eager responded by high sticking Orpik in the face. Then there were quite a few battles. The Pens end up shorthanded after all of that.

1:00: One minute remaining in the period, one minute.

3:06: Little takes a penalty and the Pens go to the PP. Malkin gets a great chance down low but can't squeak the puck through. Scratched players Comrie, Godard and Lovejoy have all joined me in the press box. It's a full house now.

4:17: Adams just laied a brushing check into Freddy Modin. Both players sprinted to a loose puck and Adams planted Modin into the boards.

5:43: It's always embarrassing when the arena "Kiss Cam" finds two people who are obviously in no mood to kiss. Well, Philips Arena found a couple like that, and then kept cutting back to them to further the tension.

6:34: Pittsburgh evens the score. Malkin took a pass from Asham below the near circle. He then snapped a sneaky shot through the body and Pavelec and into the goal. Penguins 1, Thrashers 1.

7:40: Bergfors took a pass to the right of the crease and had the whole net to shoot at. The pass was a little behind him and the extra second allowed Fleury to get over to the post and make the save.

9:51: Letang takes a shot off his glvoe and is in obvious pain.

11:08: The Penguins made some great tic-tac-toe play gets a great chance for Rupp. Malkin nearly made the rebound but just hit the outside of the cage.

12:04: The Penguins appeared to score a goal, but the referee waived off the play. I'm not sure if it was due to interference with the goaltender or not. The puck clearly went into the net though.

14:55: Matt Cooke gets a backhand shot on net, but Pavelec makes the save.

15:10: Kunitz's shot attempt goes off a stick and into the crowd. Still no shots.

16:15: Lots of hitting and passing this period, but still no shots.

20:00: I've switched to the wireless aircard. Hopefully, the will help with the connection problems. Side note, good pretzels in the press box at Philips Arena.

- Byfuglien has a game-high 3 shots
- Pittsburgh is outhitting Atlanta, 8-5
- Letang had 8:12 minutes of ice time

Fleury has looked strong in the early going tonight.

Max Talbot does a pregame interview with FSN Pittsburgh's Dan Potash.

0:00: The period comes to an end with Atlanta holding a 1-0 lead. Thrashers have a 12-10 advantage in shots.

1:50: The penalty is over. 5-on-5.

3:50: Penguins go on the power play. It'd be great for a late strike.

4:30: Ladd nearly gave Atlanta a 2-0 lead, but his hard wrist shot hit off the pipe. I apologize for the infrequency of these entries but the wirless at Philips Arena hasn't been kind to the blog.

7:43: Ladd made a brilliant move to get around Letang and was all alone on goal. But Fleury stay strong in the crease and absorbed the puck into his pads.

8:01: Penalty coming on Atlanta. Pittsburgh's PP will go to work.

9:12: A great breakout pass from Letang leads to a three-on-two. Crosby gets off a shot from above the near circle and Pavelec barely got his glove on the puck.

11:10: The Pens kept the puck in Atlanta's zone for nearly two minutes. While they didn't create a great scoring chance, they did tire out the Thrashers squad.

14:07: Pittsburgh kills off the Cooke minor. Back at even strength.

15:40: Crosby gets some work on the PK and gets himself a decent shot on goal streaking down the far side.

15:49: Fleury makes another good save on Byfuglien, consuming the puck into his chest at the top of his crease.

16:07: Cooke gets called for interference. Is it still a GNC penalty kill on road?

16:12: Ben Eager is down on the ice and goes to the dressing room for assistance.

16:43: Fleury makes an RIDICULOUS save on Dustin Byfuglien. The defenseman turned forward turned defenseman picked up a pass through the crease and had a wide-open net. Fleury made a sliding split-save to get his pad on the puck.

17:19: The Thrashers strike first as Sopel's shot from the near point snekaed through a screan and into the top corner of the net. Thrashers 1, Penguins 0.

17:39: Rupp and Thorburn drop the gloves. Rupp gets an easy victory on this as he landed about 10 clean shots to the head. The battle finally ended when Thorburn pulled Rupp to the ice for mercy.

18:04: Good work by Conner behind the Atlanta net to help generate a scoring chance.

20:00: We are underway here in Blueland.

7:00: The Penguins are close to dropping the puck against the Atlanta Thrashers. Marc-Andre Fleury will get the nod in goal tonight for Pittsburgh. He put together a strong performance less than 24 hours ago against Tampa Bay.

Head coach Dan Bylsma spoke with the media prior to the tonight's game.
