Penguins-Senators In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins
0:00: The Ottawa Senators have won the game, 3-1. The Pens finished the night with a 44-25 advantage in shots.

0:32: Letang, Goligoski, Malkin, Crosby, Cooke and Kennedy are the six skaters Bylsma has on the ice for these final seconds.

1:10:
Fisher's out of the box! The Pens now have a 6-on-5 advantage.

2:08: Bylsma is using his timeout to regroup the troops. Fleury heads to the bench. The Pens have stolen the momentum, these next two minutes are gonna be a wild ride!

3:15: And off the ensuing faceoff, Fisher trips Letang right in front of the refs. He's going to the box. Pens on the PP!

3:22: The streak continues for Sid!!! The captain shows his grit and determination when he battles from the corner to carry the puck to the net and ensures that his rebound goes in! Senators 3, Penguins 1

3:48: Both teams are back to full strength.

6:23: We were back to full strength, but Ruutu just got two for holding on Max Talbot. Cooke got involved and ended up with a roughing penalty, so we're back to 4-on-4 hockey for the next two minutes.

7:52: Pens are on the PP for the next few seconds.

8:53: Alfredsson got two for holding a minute ago, so we're 4-on-4 for the next minute. Dupuis did a nice job of keeping his feet moving on the play to get the call.

9:53: A frustrated Kunitz is getting two for interference. Pens on the PK.

10:30: What a beauty of a save!!! It looks like Foligno almost had him beat, but as Fleury's sprawled on the ice his glove snakes up and catches the puck!

10:30:
No goal. Foligno's about to take his penalty shot.

10:30: The crowd is going wild after the sequence of events that just went down. Foligno got a breakaway and at first it appeared that he didn't score, but would be getting a penalty shot. Now it looks like the puck may have crossed the line. It's too hard to say if it did or not -- the play is being reviewed.

12:26: Big hit by Z. Michalek on Alfredsson!

16:12: Crosby finds some space and is able to get a shot off, but the puck bounces off Elliott's head and into the corner.

17:47: Crosby's out of the box.

19:37: The 4-on-4 is over and the Sens have a 41-second PP.

20:00: The final frame is underway. Just got word that Jason Spezza has an upper-body injury and will not return tonight.

THIRD PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD NOTES

- Letestu leads the team with three hits.
- Goligoski still leads the team with 15:32 minutes played.
- Letang leads with two blocked shots.

0:00: We've now completed 40 minutes of hockey. Shots are now 27-18 in favor of the Pens, but the Senators now hold a 3-0 lead.

0:54: Crosby makes a gorgeous backchecking play, but somehow he's going to get two for hooking. We're finishing the period 4-on-4.

1:36: Chris Neil just tried to take Letang out after the whistle, and he bounces off No. 58 like Letang was made of rubber. A scrum ensues afterward, and when the smoke clears it's Jarkko Ruutu getting two for roughing. Pens on the PP!!!

4:51: Somebody better call the fire department, 'cause Elliott is on fire tonight. Letang just fed a wide-open Craig Adams, who almost deked out the Sens goalie but Elliott manages to get his pad in front of the puck.

6:55: Cory Clouston is using his timeout as the Sens ice the puck, to give his troops a bit of rest as Bylsma is sending out the two-headed monster of Crosby and Malkin to try and jumpstart the Pens' offense.

8:09: Dupuis gets another good scoring chance with a re-direct on Goligoski's shot, but Elliott's there for the save.

9:15: So close! Crosby's backhander hits Elliott's shoulder and bounces off the post!

10:25: Godard is back on the ice and wants some more from Carkner, but the Sens forward won't do the dance with No. 28. Godard's left eye is bruised and swollen shut and looks like a whole world of hurt.

10:44: Dupuis just ripped a one-timer from the slot so fast I almost missed it, but Elliott sees it the whole way for the stop.

11:58: Both teams back to full strength.

13:58: Foligno and Engelland both got majors, while Chris Phillips got an minor for roughing - that means Pens on the PP!

13:59: These two teams clearly don't like each other. Foligno and Engelland starting going at it in the corner after someone laid a big hit on Alfredsson, but then everyone else decided they wanted in on the action.

14:29: We're back to 5-on-5 hockey.

15:48: Bylsma is pairing each of his top guns with a speedster, due to all the extra ice that opens up in 4-on-4 hockey. Crosby just went out with Conner, while Malkin is now playing with Letestu.

17:03: After Letang hits him into the boards, Spezza lands awkwardly and it looks like he's injured - he's holding his wrist as he heads into the dressing room. Letang's getting a penalty on the play, but so is Ryan Shannon for a little after-the-whistle roughing. We're 4-on-4 for the next two minutes.

18:02: The Pens then proceeded to get a few more quality shots on net. They're starting to look alive.

18:30: Ahh, beautiful heads-up play by Crosby to find a streaking Kunitz, who snuck behind the Sens' defense to get a breakaway! But Elliott makes the save.

19:40: Aaand Karlsson strikes again. He just unleashes a shot from the point while quarterbacking the PP and it tickles the twine behind Fleury. The 20-year-old Sens D-man now has two goals on the night. Senators 3, Penguins 0

20:00: Here we go! The Pens still have about a minute-and-a-half left on the PP.

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES

- Crosby won all six of his faceoffs for a 100-percent success rate.
- Goligoski leads the Pens with 7:06 of ice time.
- Paul Martin just gave an interview on FSN and his mustache is pretty impressive.

0:00: That's it for the first. The Sens came out flying, taking a 2-0 lead as they outshot the Pens, 12-6.

0:19: Kunitz just got called for charging. Pens will end this period on the PK.

1:01: Letestu floats a shot at Elliott that he gloves and holds onto. Faceoff coming in the Sens end.

3:52: Spezza slides a pretty pass to Alfredsson in front, but Fleury comes up with a big save.

6:18:
The Sens get the extra man with a delayed penalty on the Pens, and Karlsson takes full advantage by pulling a nifty fake-shot move on the point to give himself time and space to rip a shot that whistles past Fleury. Senators 2, Penguins 0

7:48: Engelland's shot almost makes its way through traffic but ends up getting shunted to the corner.

10:46: No crossbar this time for Fisher. Erik Karlsson's quick shot from the circle deflects off a body in front then proceeds to bounce off Fisher past Fleury for the score. PP goal for the Sens. Senators 1, Penguins 0

10:55:
Also, just got word that Godard is questionable to return to the lineup tonight after his fight with Carkner.

12:10:
Crosby's heading to the box for hooking. Pens are on the PK.

12:15: The Sens just had a few more good scoring chances on that last shift. They always come to play when the Pens are on the docket.

14:12: Yikes - Fisher's wide open in the slot and one-times a pass that dings off the crossbar. The posts have Fleury's back so far tonight!

14:57: Michalek lofts a shot from the point that Brian Elliott bobbles a bit while Kennedy applies some pressure, but the Sens goalie is able to hold on. Z almost had his first of the season there!

16:59: Mike Fisher rips a shot from the point that sounded like it hit a post, but is cleared by the Pens.

17:53: We've already got a scrap between two of the heavyweights as Godard and Matt Carkner face off down in the Ottawa zone! They're pretty evenly matched but Carkner's got a little bit of an edge, as he's 6-foot-4, 238 pounds while Godard is 6-foot-4, 214 pounds.

19:06: Chris Campoli finds an open lane down the ice and unleashes a blast at Fleury. The rebound bounces into the crease but the Pens are able to clear.

20:00: They're off!

FIRST PERIOD

7:30 PM:

7:20 PM:
The big news of the day: Jordan Staal skated with the team at their morning skate!!! Feels like it's been fourscore and seven years since we've seen him on the ice with the group.

See what he had to say:

7:15 PM:
The Winter Classic Community Rink at Stage AE opened for business on Friday! Public skating sessions started on Christmas Eve, while the youth hockey games kicked off this morning.

Greetings all! Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays (and happy Boxing Day to everyone in Canada)!

The Pens are preparing to play their first game at Scotiabank Place since last season's playoffs, where Pascal Dupuis scored the overtime winner in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals to give the Pens a 4-3 win, which knocked the Sens out of the postseason.
