Penguins-Sabres In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

0:00: The horn sounds and the Pens have topped the Sabres by a score of 3-2!!!

0:22: The Sabres are coming on strong but the Pens are holding them off!

0:45: The Sabres have pulled Miller for the extra attacker!

2:55: Goligoski blocked a shot from the point by Montador.

The Sabres sustain a bit of pressure in the Penguins zone looking to tie things up, but Craig Adams makes a nice play to send the puck back down the ice.

I'm showing this again, because it's that legitimate.

6:34: Sabres back to full strength.

8:05: Goligoski's blast goes just wide!

8:54: Ennis is getting a pair for hi-sticking. The Pens are on the Power Ball Power Play!

10:00: Nice shift by Conner. His active stick kept the puck in the Sabres zone, and he got a shot off a rebound from a Staal shot.

10:27: Talbot's shot is gloved by Miller. Faceoff coming.

12:32: Jeffrey skates in and unleashes a shot that Miller barely turns aside with the end of his stick.

Note the Cinco Ocho shirt the woman is wearing in the right side of the FSN pre-game pic...

16:37: Jason Pominville busts out from behind the net and whips a shot at Fleury that skips across the crease and into the opposite corner.

19:16: Absolutely phenomenal defensive play by Paul Martin. Vanek was wheeling down the ice alone on a pseudo breakaway, but Martin dashed back and made a sliding block on his former University of Minnesota teammate to get a piece of his shot.

20:00: The final frame has commenced at CONSOL Energy Center!

Steeler Pride!!!

- The Pens are outhitting the Sabres by a 41-25 margin.
- Pittsburgh is 3-0-0 so far this season when Jeffrey scores a goal.
- Cooke and Rupp lead with six hits each.

0:00: The Pens hold the lead after the first 40 minutes with a three-goal second-period rally! They're outshooting the Sabres by a 31-16 margin.

0:32: Goligoski sends a perfect pass to Adams, who quickly one-touches it but Miller makes the save. The Pens played a perfect game of keep-away on that shift.

3:48: Michalek makes a nice defensive play on the Pens blue line to break up a Sabres rush and send the puck up ice to Adams. Adams goes down 2-on-1 with Talbot, but can't get a handle on the puck as they approach Miller.

5:55: And the Pens are now heading to the PP, as Shaone Morrisonn is in the box for cross-checking.

6:26: Pens back to full strength.

7:41: Montador's out. Sabres on the PP for about 50 seconds.

8:50: Tanger carries the puck down and accidentally crashes into Miller. He's going to get two for goalie interference, and we're 4-on-4 for 1:09.

9:41: Things just got extremely chippy behind the Sabres net, and the refs are trying to sort everything out in terms of penalties. Jordan Leopold knocked off Kennedy's helmet and Matt Cooke took exception. Cooke got a roughing penalty and a 10-minute misconduct and Leopold also got a roughing penalty. Those cancel out, but Steve Montador also got a pair for holding. That means Pens are on the PP!

10:47: The Pens nearly got their fourth goal just now! The puck was loose in front of Miller and it was a free-for-all! The puck was like a hot potato, as Pens and Sabres alike tried getting a handle on it but it evaded all of their respective reaches.

12:56: The Sabres are taking a timeout, as the Penguins just scored three goals in a span of 7:04!

12:56: Cooke makes a nifty move in front of the net to go to his backhand and shovel the puck past Miller! A beauty of a feed from Staal on the play! Penguins 3, Sabres 2

13:16: Update on Malkin: He has a lower-body injury and will not return.

13:36: Michalek dishes a nice pass to Kennedy, whose wrister from the right side of the ice flies into the netting behind Miller! The Sabres had gotten back to full strength a few seconds before. Penguins 2, Sabres 2

14:54: Letang carries the puck down the ice and blasts a shot with three Sabres surrounding him. It rockets off the post!!!

15:50: Myers is getting two for roughing. Pens on the PP.

16:10: In an impressive display of speed, Jeffrey sprints down the ice with Tim Connolly all over him. He manages to get a backhand off which Miller saves, but the rebound bounces off of Connolly's skate and into the net! Sabres 2, Penguins 1

The fans waving their towels during the video I posted during intermission!

18:38: Sabres back to full strength.

19:33: Myers crunches Geno in the corner of the Sabres zone, and Malkin stays on the ice. The trainers are tending to him now. He's able to skate off of his own accord but heads straight into the dressing room.

20:00: Here we go! The Pens start the period with 1:22 remaining on their PP.

Here's an incredibly awesome video for you to watch while we wait for the second to get underway:

- Cooke leads the Pens with five hits.
- Malkin has three shots on goal.
- Letang (Cinco Ocho) paces the Pens with 8:25 of ice time.

0:00: That'll do it for the first. The Sabres lead 2-0, but the Pens have the advantage in shots, 14-10.

0:38: The Pens will end the period on the PP as Jochen Hecht's getting two for hi-sticking.

1:58: We're all back to full strength.

2:46: Fleury stops a Tyler Myers drive with a pad save so loud you could hear it in the media level.

4:36: Malkin displays some of those smooth moves getting to the net. As he tries to dig the puck out from under Miller, Weber takes him down. Kunitz takes exception, coming to the aid of his teammate. Weber and Kunitz are going to get two each for roughing. We've got some 4-on-4 hockey.

4:59: Fleury stops Ennis on a point-blank shot in the slot.

5:38: Huge hit by Cooke on a Sabre. Couldn't see who it was, but the Buffalo player definitely got crunched.

A small break from the Terrible Towels... (Don't worry, they'll be back soon).

5:58: Miller comes up with a nifty glove save against Orpik, who ripped a shot off after a feed from Malkin.

7:30: Now there's a scrum erupting at center ice, with Talbot and Mike Weber jawing at each other while Orpik and Cody McCormick do the same a few feet away. The refs separate everyone and all is good again.

7:41: Adams dishes a nice pass to Talbot, whose shot is turned aside by Miller.

8:40: Jordan Staal wheels around and rips a shot at Miller that bounces up high and over the net with the Sabres goalie scrambling!

10:52: The Pens carry the puck right back down and Miller barely manages to get a pad on Talbot's shot!

11:36: Tyler Ennis gets a quality scoring chance off a 2-on-1 rush, but his shot hits the outside of the left post and bounces out of danger.

12:57: In a bad twist of luck, Michael Grier's shot from the side of the net deflects off Engelland's skate and into the net as he's clearing a Sabre out. Sabres 2, Penguins 0

13:22: Rupp, who's open in the slot, tees a rocket of a shot at Miller, who turns the puck aside into the corner.

If you haven't already noticed, this is going to be a Terrible Towel-themed blog. The legendary Tony "T-Bone" Jovenitti managed to get a picture of just about every different kind.

15:48: Thomas Vanek picks up a loose puck near the Pens goal and quickly backhands a shot at Fleury, who makes the save.

17:01: The puck's deflected out of play near the Pens bench. Faceoff coming.

19:43: And the Sabres promptly end the Penguins' home shutout streak. The Sabres jump on a clearing attempt by the Pens, with Paul Gaustad whipping a backhand at Fleury from the front of the net. He connects on the third rebound to get the score. Sabres 1, Penguins 0

20:00: It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh!

7:05 PM: They just announced Geno's name on the PA system, and the crowd went NUTS. Welcome back Geno!!!

7:02 PM: Terrible Towel fever started long before the doors opened here at CONSOL Energy Center, with the loyal Penguins fans in the Student Rush line already rockin' their towels.

6:50 PM: The Penguins are preparing to host the Sabres for Buffalo's first-ever trip to CONSOL Energy Center. It was a good day here in Pittsburgh, as Evgeni Malkin is back in the lineup after missing the last five games with a sinus infection and coach Bylsma made his Super Bowl prediction.

Malkin's excited to be back (and rocking a Steelers cap!), while Bylsma predicted Steelers will win by a score of...

Here's what the Pens lineup will be tonight:

Orpik-Letang (Cinco Ocho)

Fleury in goal.

6:45 PM: In honor of tonight being TERRIBLE TOWEL FRIDAY at CONSOL Energy Center, I had to put in this awesome video that honors both the positive force that lifts the Steelers to magnificent heights and the late Myron Cope, the legendary Steelers broadcaster that passed away in 2008.

I could not have found a more fitting video if I wrote, directed and shot it myself. Here we go Steelers! YOI!!!
