Petr Sykora, who missed Sunday’s 4-3 shootout victory at Washington with an undisclosed injury, missed the Penguins’ Monday afternoon practice at Southpointe. He is listed as day-to-day and his status is unknown for Pittsburghs’ contest with Florida at Mellon Arena Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
“He’s progressing,” interim head coach Dan Bylsma said. “We’ll see where he is for the next game. He doesn’t have a serious injury at this point.”>
The Penguins held a jovial breakaway contest at Southpointe. When a player scored, he knelt to the side of the ice and contributed vocally for the remainder of the contest. The last two men standing
were recently acquired Bill Guerin and Matt Cooke
. Both men went through several rounds before Guerin finally ended the contest with a score.
“I kept telling Billy that he’s falling down the charts in the shootout,” Bylsma said. “He kept insisting that his shootout stats were good so we’ll have to check that.”
Meanwhile, Cooke received an unusual punishment for losing the competition.
“You’ll see Matt Cooke
with a nice, big moustache for the next month,” Sidney Crosby
said. “He (pulls it off) pretty well. It’s a lot better than some guys but it’s still a moustache.”>
Guerin, Chris Kunitz
and Craig Adams
will make their Pittsburgh debuts against Florida Tuesday night. The trio were acquired during the Penguins’ historic five-game road trip in which the team won every contest.
“I’m looking forward to (Tuesday) night’s game, first one at home,” Guerin said. “It was good to meet the guys out on the road and get to know everyone. I’m just anxious for this first home game.”
Kunitz already knows how well Penguins fans travel and he said he can’t wait to hear how loud they are at Mellon.
“In most buildings you can hear them cheer when you (score) goals,” Kunitz said. “You can hear them yell things to you when you come out of the tunnel. It’s going to be a great feeling to be on the ice here at home for the first game but it’s been great in every building that we’ve been to.”>
He said it: Bylsma on the playing nine of the next 10 games at home:
“It does feel good to be home. It was a long road trip but a good road trip. We have quite a few homes games coming up here. It will be good to get settled. We have some big games coming up but it’s back at the confines of Mellon Arena.” Archive
