1:42 PM:
Coachspeak with Dan Bylsma...

On playing the Blackhawks:
In exhibition they’re not going to play their whole team. I’m confident that they’re trying to put that behind them and get on with the regular season. We know we’re playing a good team, that won the Stanley Cup last year. It does add a little bit to the game. It is preseason and we’re trying to put things together for our team, as are they. That’s our approach for the game.

On priorities in final week of preseason:
Defensively, being on the same page with the defenseman and their pairings. The newer guys are making adjustments with the habits that they had with their old team and what they were asked to do, versus what we do. That’s part of the next couple games. Guys are getting game time, making mistakes and learning in that regard.

And sounds heard around the locker room...

SIDNEY CROSBY

On the feel of this camp:
I think the last couple haven’t been as intense as this. There is intensity with spots available. We’ve had a little bit longer offseason, so guys are more intense.

On playing the Blackhawks
:
In the preseason you’re more worried about your team. That’s always your approach. You always respect the team that you’re playing, but at the same time you don’t want to focus on them too much. It doesn’t matter who we play. We have to focus on getting better in the preseason and creating some good habits.

MATT COOKE

On his lip
:
It’s getting better. It’s a tough one but it’s getting better. It was right through the lip. It’s been a rough couple of days, but it’s feeling better.

On having extra protection
:
Right now I’m practicing with just a regular visor. I didn’t put a full mask on. Depending on how it is come game time we’ll see if I put a full shield on.

KRIS LETANG

On the team’s timing and chemistry coming together:
We see some progress in practice and games. Both personally and as a team we’re getting better.

On the defensive pairings and the new defensemen:
I didn’t have a chance to play with either of the new guys. I think the first game I played, Brooks went out of the game so we played five D rotating. Last game I was playing with Simon Despres, so I think overall it’s been good to play with everybody.

On Despres:
He looked really good for 19 years old. He’s got a lot of poise. He’s really good with the puck, he’s patient and he’s not scared to jump in the play and make plays.

9:03 AM:
Before we get to the hockey news of the day, we need to send a quick congratulations to Penguins video editor Steve Finerty, who became a father Sunday. At 9:08 p.m. Steve and his wife, Jen, had little 7 lbs., 1 oz. Adelyn Sara Finerty. Good work bud, get those pink cigars!
