Penguins-Red Wings In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

And that's the game! The Penguins down the Red Wings 4-1 thanks to another stellar performance by Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped 36 shots, as the Wings outshot the Pens 37-29.

Matt Cooke seals the deal with an empty-net goal! Tyler Kennedy led the two-on-one and dished the puck to Cooke, who smacked it into the net. Penguins 4, Red Wings 1

After a few shots were stopped by Fleury, Filppula attempts a backhander that is stopped by Paul Martin, who then clears the puck back into the neutral zone.

Fleury makes a big save on a shot from the far dot.

13:39: Flower with a big save on Ericsson after he sends a blistering wrister at the Pens net.

15:33: The puck bounces into the Pens zone and into the waiting glove of Fleury after some back-and-forth play.

18:45: Two big saves by Flower. Filppula fires a hard shot at Fleury that he saves; and Flower goes on to smother Filppula's shot off the rebound.

20:00: The final frame is off and running!

Five of the Pens' best plays against Western Conference rival Detroit. Definitely worth the watch:

- Kunitz has fired a team-leading four shots.
- Six different Penguins have gotten on the scoresheet so far tonight.
- Martin still leads with 15:56 of ice time.

0:00: The Pens will take a 3-1 lead into the final frame. Shots are even at 25.

2:02: Talk about a fast response!!! Malkin intercepts a pass on the blue line and carries it in. He dishes to Dupuis, whose shot bounces out front to Kunitz, who puts it in the back of the net! What a beautiful sequence of events! Penguins 3, Red Wings 1

2:32: Zetterberg carried the puck out front to Eaves, who slides a pass to Franzen on the back door. He stuffs the puck in the net for the score. Penguins 2, Red Wings 1

5:23: A couple of quality shots for the Pens, but neither finds the back of the net.

6:19: The puck rims around the boards to Letang as he steps out of the sin bin, but he can't get a handle on it with a Wing hot on his heels.

7:23: Cooke is out of the box. Pens are now killing a 5-on-4 Detroit power play.

8:26: Now Letang is heading to the box after tripping Drew Miller on a breakaway. The two teams will be 4-on-4 for 44 seconds.

9:09: Someone call the cops, because Cinco Ocho (Letang) just got robbed!!! He had a wide open net, but his shot somehow managed to hug the line the whole way across. Letang had his arms up and verything. You can't get much closer than that.

9:42: Ruslan Salei is heading to the box after tripping up Rupp in the corner! Pens are heading to the PP after two PKs!

10:44: After he gets out of the box, Kunitz immediately gets a great scoring chance on a backhand shot off a long rebound! But no dice for No. 14. A few huge stops by Flower on that PK.

12:54: Kunitz goes off for hooking after his stick gets caught under the arm of Filppula. Pens are back to the PK pretty quickly.

13:31: Pens are back to full strength!

Big shot block by Dupuis on Lidstrom, who likes to unleash his cannon of a shot from the blue line on the power play.

14:58: Hudler rips a shot from the corner at an odd angle that takes a few weird bounces, but Fleury is able to corral it.

15:31: Cooke's going off for tripping after the Wings manage to cycle the puck low in the Penguins zone. Pens on the PK!

16:55: Letestu rips a shot from the circle, but MacDonald makes the save.

17:40: Mike Rupp nearly breaks free for a breakaway, but Kindl steps up and intercepts the pass.

19:40: Franzen nearly finds himself all alone in front of Fleury, but a nifty defensive play by Letang (Cinco Ocho) knocks the stick out of the hands of "Mule."

20:00: The second period has commenced!

This vid is awesome. Some great highlights from the Pens-Wings recent battles:

Conner's goal marked the first Penguins' penalty shot to find the back of the net since Jarkko Ruutu in 2007.
- With his assist on Staal's goal, Kennedy now has 100 career points! Congrats TK!
- Paul Martin leads the Pens with 7:46 of ice time.

0:00: That'll do it for the first 20 minutes! The Pens take a 2-0 lead into the middle frame. Shots are 16-13 in favor of Pittsburgh.

0:43: Lidstrom sends a cross-ice pass to Bertuzzi, who whips a shot at Fleury that the Pens goalie saves.

1:56: Darren Helm tips a shot that Fleury saves; but the Wings forward is able to grab a couple of his rebounds. Fleury comes up with the stop every time.

2:04: Todd Bertuzzi is able to fire a shot at Fleury, but Flower easily makes the save.

4:12: The Pens are giving the Wings absolutely nothing so far this period. Detroit's forecheck can't solve the Pittsburgh defense, and the Pens' forward lines are working it hard in the Wings zone.

Nick Lidstrom (right) was named one of the two captains for the NHL All-Star Game.

6:42: The Cooke-Staal-Kennedy line is wreaking havoc again behind the Detroit net. All three players cluster to the front of the net, but MacDonald finds the puck and smothers it.

8:31: Conner flies out of nowhere for another breakaway! He's hauled down again and is getting a penalty shot this time! AND HE SCORES!!! He goes to his backhand and slides it underneath MacDonald!!! The crowd was INSANE that whole time. Penguins 2, Red Wings 0

9:37: Huge hit by Kunitz on Filppula in the Wings' zone! Welcome to CONSOL Energy Center!

Pens warming up with a little pregame soccer. These guys are all out, as they let the ball touch the ground under their watch.

11:31: In a burst of explosive speed, Conner nearly powers past Jakub Kindl. As Conner's hauled down, he manages to one-arm a shot at MacDonald as he crashes into the net. Nice work by No. 18.

12:08: Zetterberg tries to power past Orpik and Letang, but he can't get a quality shot off and Fleury makes the save.

13:02: After a great scoring chance from in the slot that MacDonald saves, Dupuis goes on to fire a shot that clangs off the post!

13:48: Staal's clearing attempt goes high and into the Pens bench.

14:37: Mark Letestu sees some open ice down the middle and makes a break for it. Craig Adams tries to hit him with the home run pass, but it misses him and goes into the corner.

16:49: Staal is all smiles on the bench, as he should be -- he's now riding a three-game point streak that's seen him record three goals and three assists.

16:58: After Joey MacDonald goes to play the puck behind the net, Tyler Kennedy is there to pick his pocket and dish the rubber to a wide-open Jordan Staal, who shoots into an open net! Penguins 1, Red Wings 0

17:54: Uh oh, Max Talbot is on the loose! He whips a backhander at MacDonald that the Wings goalie deflects into the corner.

19:15: The Wings get a great chance early, as Zetterberg's shot wobbles over the pad of Fleury and comes to rest in the crease. But Letang is there to stuff the puck underneath his goaltender and avert the danger.

20:00: They're off!

7:03 PM: A chorus of boos greeted the Wings as they stepped onto the ice. They're starting with Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Patrick Eaves up top, Brian Rafalski and Jonathan Ericsson on the back end, and Joey MacDonald in goal.

The Pens will put Cooke, Staal, Kennedy, Orpik and Letang out for the opening faceoff. Marc-Andre Fleury gets the nod between the pipes. The Pens lines are the same as they have been:

Deryk Engelland is in on defense. Ben Lovejoy is scratched.

6:50 PM:
There was lots goin' on at CONSOL Energy Center today with the Wings in town and Sidney Crosby speaking to the media following the Pens' morning skate.

Hear what Crosby had to say:

6:45 PM:
The Detroit Red Wings are in town. You know what that means – an exciting game of fast-paced, hard-hitting, emotional hockey is in store. Despite several key players being out with injury – Sidney Crosby for the Pens, Pavel Datsyuk for the Wings to name a couple – it's still sure to be a great game. And how could it not be, with the history these two teams have over the past few years?

It's only fitting to start the blog with a few epic memories that greet the media every time we walk to our seats:
