Penguins-Lightning In-Game Blog

by Sam Kasan / Pittsburgh Penguins

0:00: That'll do it. Pens win their most lopsided game of the season with an 8-1 victory. Kunitz a hat trick, Goose four points (1G-3A), Letang 3 assists. Stamkos classic penalty shot. Pens win 8-1. Off to Montreal for a showdown with the Habs Thursday night.

1:27: Pens kill the penalty. Time ticking away in this game.

3:19: Crosby goes to the box. Let's see if Tampa can score seven on this PP.

10:12: What a save by Fleury!!! On a 2-on-1, the pass got across but Fleury stones the shooter.

12:20: Another penalty on the Bolts as Bergenheim boards Adams hard along the near wall.

13:52: Matching penalties for Michalek and Malone as the two rough it up behind the net. Orpik also sits. Tampa still has the one-man advantage.

15:00: Lovejoy goes to the box for hooking. PK goes to work.

16:22: Goligoski gets it back for the Pens. The classic 4-on-1 rush, Goose rips a wrist shot over Ellis' glove. Great play by Goligoski to shoot instead of looking for the perfect pass. It's Goligoski's first four-point game in career. Penguins 8, Lightning 1

17:35: Lightning get on the board with a fluky goal. Hall tips a shot in front the slipped through Fleury as the Bolts chip away. Penguins 7, Lightning 1

20:00: Ellis back in net for Tampa as the goalie rotation continues.

- Kunitz gets 2nd career hat trick
- Kunitz and Kennedy with 5 shots each
- Pens have 36 shots through 2 periods

0:00: Two periods in the books. The Pens are a plus-7.

0:10: There it is!!!! Kunitz re-directs a shot from the point by Goligoski for his third goal of the game and second career hat trick. Atta boy! Penguins 7, Lightning 0

1:19: Hedman gets called for boarding Crosby behind the Bolts net. PP time. Here we go!

2:29: Great job by Goligoski to separate Thompson from the puck as he streaked down the near side.

3:44: Ryan Malone nearly buries a shot from point-blank range, cut Fleury stones him.

7:06: The onslaught continues. Letestu puts on his best "Geno" impression with some dekes before lifting a backhander over an abused Roloson. Penguins 6, Lightning 0

10:21: Kunitz nearly gets the HT. Crosby with a great pass to spring him on a breakaway. Kunitz tried to go five-hole, but Roloson closed the pads.

12:36: Malkin with a great fake shot, curl and wrist shot. He's playing some sick hockey right now.

13:55: Matching penalties to Rupp and Downie. 4-on-4 hockey. And it's the Big Mac Attack! The excitement is deafening.

14:15: A couple birds keep flying through our media level view. I want to know where they live at in this arena. They're multiplying like crazy.

17:23: Stamkos gets hauled down on a breakaway. He's awarded a penalty shot! Stamkos loses the puck and then loses an edge. He just fell down on the shot and slid helpless to the boards. I've never seen that before. A "Stamkos" jeer rains down.

19:14: Pens nearly get another as the puck sneaks through the crease. But the Bolts clear it from trouble.

20:00: Roloson is back in net for Tampa Bay.

- Only 3 Bolts players are an even rating, the rest are minus
- Pens score four goals in 7:35 span
- Kunitz (2G) and Letang (1G-1A) with two-point periods

0:00: The first concludes. I'd say the Pens got the better of the opening 20 minutes. Agree?

:53: Pittsburgh back on the power play. Downie goes to the box this time.

1:04: Pens score again. Kunitz re-directs a shot in front of the net on a Goligoski shot for his second score of the game. Letang really made that play with a nifty pass against a pressuring PK. Penguins 5, Lightning 0

1:32: Kubina for holding. Pens PP in action.

2:13: Pens keep the pressure on, outshooting the Bolts, 18-7, so far.

4:31: Another solid shift from Malkin. The Pens winger/center is having a great game so far.

5:19: Everybody clap your hands!!!!!

5:29: Great shift from Matt Cooke. First he slid on the ice to block a clearing attempt in the O zone. On the ensuing possession, he fought off a Bolt to get a rebound for a shot. Great effort.

8:22: Conner rings one off the post. Nearly a 5-0 lead. Oh well, give it time.

12:18: Are you serious right now?!?! Kunitz carries the puck down the far side and rips a shot over the shoulder of Ellis. Penguins 4, Lightning 0

12:43: Another goal! TK carries the puck untouched through the neutral zone and O zone. Three Lightning around him and no one stepped up on him. Two players dropped to cover Malkin while Kennedy duked Roloson to his knees and sneaked a shot through the five-hole. Roloson's night is over. Penguins 3, Lightning 0

15:35: Crosby's shot from the circle is blocked. He collects the rebound and his backhander nearly goes in.

17:37: Pittsburgh gets on the board again. Lovejoy sends a shot-pass from the midpoint that goes off Chris Conner's skate and into the net. Just the way the coaches drew it up I'm sure. Penguins 2, Lightning 0

17:59: Purcell tries to stuff a wraparound in the net, but is denied by Fleury.

18:33: Crosby gets in on a breakaway, but Roloson makes the saves. So close to two early strikes.

19:53: The Pens strike iron early! Malkin intercepts a pass off the opening faceoff for a breakaway. His initial shot is stopped, but he finds the rebound and buries a shot from a tough angle. Penguins 1, Lightning 0

20:00: Ready? Go!

7:05 PM: Unbelievable fan response to Staal's announcement in the starting lineup. Staal is playing in his first game this season not in a football stadium.

7:02 PM: No surprises on tonight's lines. Same from the morning skate. Godard, Engelland and Asham are scratched.

7:00 PM: Crosby vs. Stamkos. Doesn't have the same ring or media hoopla as Crosby vs. Ovechkin. Nonetheless, Crosby and Stamkos have no doubt been the two most dangerous players/snipers in the NHL this season. Any time these two go head-to-head it makes for an exciting matchup.

Sid has 1 goal and 3 points against the Lightning this season, with Stamkos has 1 goals and 4 points against the Pens. Last time these two teams met at CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh pulled off a 5-1 win that set them off on a 14-0-1 unbeaten streak. It also started the turnaround for goaltender Marc-Andre Fluery.

But Tampa Bay is much more than Stamkos. For one thing, much of Stamkos' success is really a result of the great play of Martin St. Louis, who ranks third in the NHL in scoring (51 points) behind Crosby (65) and Stamkos (56).

And let's not forget the captain, Vincent Lecavalier. "The two utes..."
