Penguins-Jackets In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

What a performance by the Penguins! Pittsburgh absolutely dominated from the drop of the puck, barreling past Columbus, 7-2. The Penguins finished with a 35-23 shots-on-goal advantage to win their ninth straight!

3:48: I forgot to mention that both teams are back to full strength - Pittsburgh is now 3-for-4 with the man-advantage tonight.

A Columbus shot hits the boards and bounces onto the top of the net, but Fleury's all over it and the play is whistled dead.

Columbus blueliner Mike Commodore is whistled for hi-sticking and the Pens will go on their fourth power play of the night. They're 3-for-3 so far in this game.

Crosby just thieved a puck from Fedor Tyutin and battled his way into the Columbus zone, but his backhander is turned away by Garon. Both teams are back to full strength.

Hedja's rocket from the point is saved by Fleury. Nice shot by the Blue Jackets defenseman.

Engelland's heading to the box for elbowing. Pens on the PK.

11:41: The "Let's go Pens" chant is starting up again! The Pittsburgh contingent that traveled to Columbus in support of their squad has helped give the Blue Jackets a sell-out for tonight's game!

Not gonna lie, I jump in my seat every time I hear that cannon. Here's a picture of our VP of Communications Tom McMillan taken last season with it:

The cannon is going off for the second time tonight as Chris Clark rifles a shot shortside past Fleury. Penguins 7, Blue Jackets 2

The third and final period is underway here at Nationwide Arena.

The Penguins are playing out of their minds tonight. Here's a little ditty in honor of Pittsburgh's performance so far:

- 10 different Penguins have added their name to the scoresheet thus far tonight
- The defensive pairing of Alex Goligoski and Deryk Engelland are both plus-three
- Mark Letestu and Kris Letang each have two assists

The second period comes to a close with the Penguins holding a 7-1 lead and a 29-17 shots-on-goal advantage.

The Blue Jackets will finish this period on the power play, as Adams gets two for holding.

Lucky number seven! Engelland just snipes a blast from the point that he tucks neatly under the crossbar past Garon. Penguins 7, Blue Jackets 1

Brilliant save by Fleury, who has come up with the big saves when he's needed to! Nash sent a pass squarely to the stick of Jakub Vorachek, who one-times it at Fleury. The Pens netminder does the splits and gets his pad on the shot.

Fleury smothers a blast from the point. Faceoff coming.

Play has been back-and-forth these last few minutes, and we're finally getting a stoppage of play for a TV timeout.

It's right back to the sin bin for Rupp and Boll, as the two just faced off minutes after getting released for their coincidental minors. Rupp gets the decision as he just pummels the Blue Jackets forward, and they both are getting five for fighting.

Absolutely beautiful play by Kunitz and Crosby. Kunitz carries the puck in deep and slides the puck over to a wide-open Crosby, who one-times it past Mathieu Garon for his second goal of the night and 23rd of the season. Penguins 6, Blue Jackets 1

There's a little pushing and shoving going on at the faceoff, as Mike Rupp and Jared Boll will both get two minutes each for unsportsmanlike conduct. We're playing some 4-on-4 hockey folks!

Tyler Wright played for the Penguins organization from 1996 to 2000 before heading to Columbus.

Fleury's bid for a shutout has been stymied, wtih Samuel Pahlsson tipping a Rostislav Klesla shot under the crook of Fleury's arm, with the puck barely squeaking through that tiny space. Penguins 5, Blue Jackets 1

There are contributions coming from ALL OVER the Penguins lineup tonight. Tyler Kennedy just notched his fifth goal of the season Bobby Orr style, as he shoots the puck and knocks in his own rebound while flying through the air. Penguins 5, Blue Jackets 0

Fleury makes a nice stop as he manages to get his pad on a Columbus shot. The Penguins ice the puck, and head coach Dan Bylsma will call a time out to give his players a bit of rest before play resumes.

And the Penguins have successfully killed off Cooke's four-minute penalty. We're back to full strength!

The middle frame is off and running!

- Paul Martin has scored on two of his three shots
- In addition to his two goals, he leads the team with two blocked shots
- The Penguins finished the period 3-for-3 with the man-advantage

Now that's how you want to start a hockey game!  The Pens are up 4-0 after 20 minutes, with Pittsburgh owning a hefty advantage in shots, 16-2.

Matt Cooke just got a four-minute penalty, two for holding and two for unsportsmanlike conduct. This is the Blue Jackets' second power play of the night.

Wow. The Pens are now 3-for-3 on the power play! Mark Letestu rips a blast from the point that Sidney Crosby deflects textbook-style into the net to extend his point streak to 15 games. Penguins 4, Blue Jackets 0

The fourth line of Eric Godard, Michael Rupp and Craig Adams just drew a penalty for their strong play in Columbus zone. Ethan Moreau is getting two for slashing, and we're back on the PP. Lots of special-teams play so far this period.

Before tonight, Martin had just one goal (an empty-netter) through 27 games. This is the second two-goal game of his career.

Paul Martin with his second goal of the night! He takes a pass on his backhand, moves it to his forehand and skates in on Mason, shooting it through the Columbus netminder's five-hole. Penguins 3, Blue Jackets 0

I spoke too soon. The Pens are on the power play after Marc Methot heads to the sin bin for hi-sticking.

And Pittsburgh made it through that penalty unscathed. Both teams are back to full strength.

Orpik just got two for tripping and the Pens are now on the PK for the second time tonight.

And that's what you get when you crash the net! Eric Godard flicks a shot toward the net, which squeaks behind Mason and Mike Rupp is there to stuff home the puck! Penguins 2, Blue Jackets 0

And the Pens score with 0:42 left with the man-advantage! Paul Martin throws a puck toward the net, which deflects off a Blue Jackets' skate and past a surprised Mason! That's the Pittsburgh defenseman's second of the season. Penguins 1, Blue Jackets 0

Chris Clark is getting two for slashing, and the Pens are on the power play!

Deryk Engelland just whipped a shot at Mason, who makes a nifty glove save, and now Brooks Orpik is back on the ice for the Pens.

Chris Conner just used his speed to wheel past a Blue Jackets defender and rip a shot at Steve Mason as he fell to the ice, which deflected wide.

Prime example of the great fans Pittsburgh has: A "Let's go Pens" chant just reverberated throughout the area. Plenty of black and gold jerseys in the stands tonight, as Columbus is just a three-hour ride from Pittsburgh.

Zbynek Michalek returns the favor to a Blue Jacket that he just crushes in the corner. This game is off to a physical start.

Rick Nash just laid a huge hit on Brooks Orpik in the corner, who is slow to get up. The trainers are attending to him right now. He seems to be okay as he makes it off the ice without any help.

We're off!

7:01 PM: has learned that forward Evgeni Malkin will not be playing in tonight's contest versus the Blue Jackets here at Nationwide Arena. He suffered an undisclosed injury in Thursday's 3-2 win over Atlanta.

Ben Lovejoy and Mike Comrie are the other scratches for the Pens.

Maxime Talbot, however, will be in the lineup after sustaining a bruise after blocking a shot in practice on Friday. "I’m good, I have my jump, I’ll be ready to go (tonight)," he said following the team's morning skate.

7:00 PM: This fan by the media level just started a "Steve Mears" chant that went on for about five straight minutes. Our Penguins Live HD Radio host is kind of a big deal here in Columbus.

6:59 PM: Hello and welcome to Nationwide Arena! This is my first road trip with the team, and it's been a blast so far.

Waving to you from "Stinger's Place" before I "fired" the cannon.
