The Penguins installed a new vending machine in CONSOL Energy Center on Wednesday. But this one dispenses much cooler things than mini cookies and bags of chips.
The machine, designed by the Penguins and rented from Innovative Vending Solutions, gives out prizes like sunglasses, earbuds, autographed merchandise, playoff tickets and even a stick used by goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.
It isn’t activated by quarters either. Instead, all fans need to do is tweet their favorite playoff moment and include the hashtags “Pens” and a unique hashtag given by the machine.
Fans can use the machine once per Twitter handle from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.
Pittsburgh native Lisa Rectenwald had her interest piqued when she and a friend saw the Twitter vending machine on the Penguins’ Snapchat story. Both of them showed up half an hour early to see what the buzz was about.
“(We were) like, Twitter vending machine? What is that? Definitely want to find out more about that,” she said.
Adam Murdock, a student at nearby Duquesne, was also excited.
“It’s really good for college students like me who don’t any money or don’t have any time to come down and get autographs or buy things like that, so this is a cool, inexpensive way to do it,” Murdock said.
“I set my alarms to make sure I was up because I had to get something cool,” he added. “It’s definitely a cool experience.”
