Forward Evgeni Malkin
will be Pittsburgh’s representative at the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, which will be played on Sunday, Jan. 29 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.
Malkin, the Penguins’ leading scorer with 45 points (17G-28A) in 35 games, will be making his fourth-straight All-Star Game appearance after being previously selected in 2011, ’09 and ’08. Last season Malkin missed the game due to injury, but in two previous appearances he has tallied one goal and two assists.
After missing most of the second half of last season due to a knee injury, Malkin has rebounded this season by producing some of the best numbers of his six-year career. As of Thursday, Malkin places seventh (tied) in the NHL scoring race, 10th (tied) in assists, third in shots with 163 and 10th (tied) in power-play points with 16.
Malkin is on pace to post the second-highest goal total (37 goals) and third-highest point total (99 points) of his career.
This season Malkin has helped carry a Pittsburgh team that has been decimated by a league-leading 219 man-games lost due to injury. The NHL’s ‘First Star’ for the month of December, Malkin enters Friday’s game against the Florida Panthers with eight goals and 21 points over his previous 14 games.
