Penguins-Flyers In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

That'll do it. Pittsburgh's winning streak will stall at 12 games with this 3-2 loss to their cross-state rival Philadelphia. The Flyers outshot the Pens, 37-23.

The Pens have pulled Fleury! The PP is over so it's 6-on-5!

After that series of chances, Richards and Darroll Powe wheel right back down the ice on a 2-on-1 odd-man rush. Richards whips a shot at Fleury, who makes the save, but Powe ends up toppling onto the Pens netminder and he'll get two for goaltender interference. Pens on the PP!

Malkin skates down low and gets a shot at Boucher, who comes up with the save. Orpik swoops down low and gets another quality shot off to no avail!

Quality scoring chance by Flyers D man Timonen, but Fleury is there to stifle his shot.

Talk about standing on your head. Jeff Carter tees off two quick shots, and on the Flyer forward's second attempt, Fleury's pad stymies his shot and Flower leaps to cover the rebound.

10:06: Pronger's snapshot deflects off Scott Hartnell, who's planted firmly in front of Fleury, and tickles the twine on the Flyers power play. Flyers 3, Penguins 2

10:54: Aaand we're heading right back to the PK. Malkin is getting two for interference as he gets tangled with a Flyer on Philadelphia's blue line.

11:48: Excellent defensive play by Adams! He anticipates a Philadelphia pass and makes the Flyers pay, sending it down the ice as Rupp's penalty expires.

Fleury's goalie pad is sure getting a lot of work tonight, as it robs Mike Richards of a quality scoring chance. The rebound deflects crazily into the corner and out of danger.

13:46: And now the Penguins forward is heading to the box. Rupp just got whistled for tripping. Flyers on the PP.

Rupp gets some time and space to skate the puck down low, but his shot is turned away.

Unbelievable! Sid sends the puck over to Geno as the two work the point, and Malkin rips a shot through the five-hole of Boucher! Penguins 2, Flyers 2

Malkin draws his second hi-sticking penalty of the night, as Carle's stick snakes up and nicks him in the face. It's going to be 4-on-3 hockey for 43 seconds.

Fleury makes a pretty acrobatic save on a Flyer, and there's going to be penalties called off the play. Talbot's getting two for holding the stick, and Briere is heading to the box as well. We're going to play some 4-on-4 hockey.

Michalek is freed from the box, and we're back to full-strength.

20:00: The last 20 minutes are underway.

- Malkin leads all skaters with seven shots.
- Matt Cooke paces both teams with six hits.
- Letang has played a team-leading 16:40 of ice time.

The Flyers had no shortage of quality scoring chances on that shift, but Fleury and the Penguins stand tall. The Flyers are up 2-1 after the second and hold a 23-18 advantage in shots.

1:45: Michalek, one of the Pens best penalty killers, is heading to the box for hooking. The Flyers will finish the second period with the man-advantage.

Talbot generates some speed down the left side of the ice and wrists a shot at Boucher that the goalie tries to scoop with his shoulder, but it squirts onto the ice and nearly bounces in!

3:21: Andrej Meszaros' shot from the point takes an unexpected turn as it makes its way to Fleury, but the Pens netminder is able to react in time and make the save.

Malkin battles through a couple of Flyers defenders on his back and whirls a backhand at Boucher. Geno's really been battling for the Penguins in this game so far.

Pittsburgh successfully kills that one off, and we're back to full strength!

Timonen's slapper from the point goes wide, and the Pens head right back down the ice.

Engelland's getting a pair for hooking, and the Flyers are getting their third PP of the night (and the period).

James van Riemsdyk and Nikolay Zherdev went down the ice on a 2-on-1, and instead of passing to his teammate Zherdev makes some nifty moves and floats the puck over Fleury. Flyers 2, Penguins 1

Conner's penalty expires immediately after Flower makes a couple of huge blocks!

Pronger blasted a missile from the point, but Fleury robs him with a huge pad save. The puck dribbles lose and a Flyer finds the rebound, but misses the net!

Crosby got an assist on No. 71's tally! The Penguins captain has now tied his career-best point streak, as this is the 19th game that he's earned a point!

As the Flyers' penalty concludes with Malkin's goal, Conner is being sent to the box for holding. Pens are now on the PK.

Welcome back Geno!!! Malkin just SNIPED a one-timer from the circle past Boucher, short side over the goalie's glove! Penguins 1, Flyers 1

Malkin is back out on the PP with Crosby, Cooke, Letang and Goligoski. Two huge chances for the Pens, but somehow Boucher keeps the puck out of the net!

There's a scrum ensuing in the Pens zone, and it looks like a penalty going to be called. In a battle down low with Goligoski, Briere hooks the Pens defenseman with his stick and the Flyer is going to the box. Pens are on the PP.

Both teams are back to full strength!

Craig Adams makes a heads-up play to steal the puck from a Flyer in the Pens end and Pittsburgh will head down the ice 3-on-2. Boucher comes up with the save.

The Flyers are now on the PP.

I spoke too soon about the players keeping their emotions in check. After the Pens power play has a couple of great scoring chances, three Flyers take offense with Cooke as he's planted in front of the net. Somehow, Cooke is the only one sent to the box as the refs gave him two for roughing. 4-on-4 for 36 seconds.

Nodl hi-sticks Malkin as No. 71 skates the puck deep into Flyers territory and nearly scores on his resulting shot. Pens on the PP as Nodl gets a pair!

20:00: The second period has begun at the Wells Fargo Center.

- Malkin played 6:40 of ice time in his return.
- He leads the Penguins with two shots.
- The Penguins are outhitting the Flyers, 15-12.

0:00: Both teams have kept their emotions so far this period, as there haven't been any penalties handed out to either squad. Yes, you heard that right! The Flyers take a 1-0 lead into the second period, and hold a 12-7 shots-on-goal advantage over the Penguins.

Jeffrey with a steal behind the Flyers net that he tries to stuff repeatedly past Boucher to no avail.

Conner emerges from behind the net and hooks a backhand shot at Boucher, who comes up with the save. The Flyers don't seem to have an answer for speed and tenacity of the Pens third line.

Sid battles his way out of a sea of black and orange in the corner, and finds Geno in front. Boucher makes a series of solid saves. Nos. 87 and 71 sure look comfortable out there together.

Fleury stretches his pad out just in time to block a shot. Beautiful stop by Flower, and the play is whistled dead because the Flyers hand-passed the puck.

Michalek's pass almost turns into a home run up the ice, but it's knocked away by a Flyers defenseman.

7:28: Fleury loses his stick trying to corral a puck in the corner, and Danny Briere picks up the loose puck. He sends the rubber in front and Claude Giroux finds it through a flurry of players to whip it past the Pens goaltender. Flyers 1, Penguins 0

Wow - Nodl just tried a fancy spin-o-rama move on Fleury as he was planted in front of the net, but Flower makes an unbelievable save and the Pens clear!

Engelland just made a fantastic defensive play on James van Riemsdyk, as he lifts the stick of the Flyers forward to stifle a centering pass.

Conner just banked a pass to himself through a Flyers defenseman and blew right past him to get the puck down low. The speed of that third line is phenomenal.

Kind of a slow start to this game. A lot of icing and offsides whistle. It's hard for either team to get into any rhythm.

16:14: Fleury just robbed Matt Carle with a pad save! The rebound jumps out to the stick of Andreas Nodl, who misses the open net!

Nice interception by Tyler Kennedy as he picks the pocket of a Flyers defenseman on the Penguins blueline.

Head coach Dan Bylsma has started Malkin on the top line alongside Crosby and Dupuis. It's so satisfying to see No. 71 back in action!

20:00: And we're off here in Philly! Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride!

6:40 PM: We're approaching game time against cross-state rival Philadelphia. To get everyone's adrenaline pumping, here's a song that never failed to get me psyched before a big game during my hockey career at Michigan State. Hopefully it has the same effect on all of you!
