Penguins-Bruins In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

3:08: Dustin Jeffrey accelerates around the Bruins defense, protecting the puck like nobody's business! He then lifts the puck over Thomas to win the game for the Pens! Penguins 3, Bruins 2

5:00: They're off!

OVERTIME

0:00: That'll do it for regulation. We're going to overtime.

0:32: David Krejci scores with 32.5 seconds remaining in regulation. He had been planted in the slot and received a feed from a teammate stationed behind the net. Penguins 2, Bruins 2

0:48: Cooke tries to pick his spot as he bears down on the empty net, but his shot is blocked.

1:11: The Bruins pull Thomas!!!

3:00: Staal pounces on a loose puck at the Bruins blue line and powers his way to the net, but his shot is saved by Thomas.

5:11: Neal keeps coming so close to scoring his first goal as a Penguin! He just sent a Kovalev feed to the net that went just wide.

7:43: Dennis Seidenberg unleashes a blast that finds its way through traffic, with all three Bruins forwards coverging on the puck. But Fleury is able to pounce on the loose rubber.

9:17: Kovalev floats a shot on goal that Thomas comes out and grabs.

12:19: Bruins back to full strength.

12:57: Diving effort by Neal to hold the blue line and keep the puck in the Bruins zone!

14:19: Lucic is in the box. Pens on the PP!

15:21: Letestu comes up a sick toe-drag and his scorcher rings off the post!!!

16:40: Whew. Another great shift by the Bruins that kept the Pens trapped in their own zone. But TK is eventually able to skate the puck out.

18:42: Fleury makes a wheeling glove save on Horton!

19:28: The Bruins come out hard to start the period, forcing Fleury to make a series of saves at the puck bounces around crazily. The Pens are eventually able to clear but are called for icing.

20:00: Here we go!

THIRD PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- Letestu is 6-of-9 on faceoffs while Staal is 7-of-9
- Neal leads with three hits
- Martin and Letang each have three blocked shots
- Martin has a plus-2 rating

0:00: The first 40 minutes are in the books. The Pens hold a 2-1 lead and are outshooting the Bruins by a 29-20 margin.

0:28: Neal gets a great chance on the doorstep after a pretty feed from Kovalev, but he is denied.

1:14: Some fast-paced, back-and-forth hockey over these last few minutes.

4:03: After Lucic slips while handling the puck on the boards, the Cooke-Staal-Kennedy line carries the puck in deep. Cooke's shot is blocked.

6:22: Jeffrey goes down on one knee to blast a shot on net that flies just over the cage! The line of Talbot-Jeffrey-Dupuis is having a phenomenal game so far.

8:41: Talbot dishes a pass across the slot to Michalek on the point after Martin pinched in to keep play hemmed in the Boston zone. Michalek sends a shot-pass over to Jeffrey, who's planted in front of the net. He beats Thomas for the score! Penguins 2, Bruins 1

9:51: After the Bruins force Fleury to make a series of phenomenal saves, the puck rebounds into the slot one last time. Cooke holds down the stick of the last Boston defender at the blue line to allow Staal and Kennedy to wheel down the ice on a 2-on-1 rush! The two players make a series of back-and-forth passes before Staal taps it into the wide-open net for the score! Penguins 1, Bruins 1

11:31: Dupuis sends a long leading pass to Talbot. He can't quite get anything going off that play, but the Pens keep the puck corralled in the Bruins zone.

12:34: Chara walks into the slot and whips a shot into the back of the cage past Fleury, who was completely screened by Milan Lucic. Bruins 1, Penguins 0

13:18: Both teams are throwing their weight around out there tonight. The hits are aplenty at TD Garden right now!

16:01: Thomas barely gets his glove on a Kovalev one-timer!

17:06: Bruins back to full strength.

18:23: Neal's shot rings off the red painted metal!

19:07: And now the Bruins are getting a bench minor for having too many men on the ice! Pens on the PP.

19:23: A puck takes a funny bounce off the back boards right to the stick of Peverly, but luckily his shot misses the net!

20:00: And they're off!

SECOND PERIOD

FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- Staal is 6-of-7 on faceoffs for an 86-percent success rate
- Adams leads with three shots
- Michalek leads with 8:26 of ice time while Martin is right behind with 8:25 minutes

0:00: That'll do it for a hard-hitting, physical first. We're still scoreless and the Pens hold the advantage in shots, 14-9.

1:35: Another great shift by the Pens that starts a pileup in front of the Boston net before the Bruins are able to clear! As play shifts to the other end, Adams and Nathan Horton duke it out in the Boston zone.

2:01: Relentless play by the Pens just now! They just forced Thomas to make a series of great saves on that shift.

4:06: Neal just casually throws Zdeno Chara to the ground as the two race for a puck! Impressive display of strength there by Neal.

4:52: Pens back to full strength.

5:37: Letang jumps up and gloves a puck in the Pens zone and is off to the races, wheeling down the ice and whipping a shot at Thomas that the Bruins goalie has to cover.

6:52: Lovejoy is in the box for hooking. Pens on the PK.

7:48: Kennedy is nearly able to shovel in a Deryk Engelland rebound, but it bounces high!

8:50: Martin with a nifty little stutter step to carry the puck deep into the Bruins zone. Solid shift just now by the Pens.

11:30: Fleury comes to the top of his crease and challenges a Nathan Horton shot, which he absorbs for the faceoff.

14:17: Pittsburgh native Matt Bartkowski is patrolling the blue line right now for the Bruins. It's his third-ever NHL game, with his previous two appearances also coming against the Penguins! That's gotta be a first. We caught up with him after his league debut on Jan. 10 at CONSOL Energy Center - click here for the story.

17:01: Shawn Thornton and Rupp are duking it out at center ice. And Rupp fells Thornton with a few right-handed punches! Rupp definitely gets the decision on that one.

17:32: Michael Ryder gets a clear path to the net but Fleury somehow gets his pad between the puck and the net while sprawled on his stomach! Then the rubber sneaks into the blue paint but somehow the Pens are able to keep it from crossing the goal line!

18:17: Jeffrey makes a nice bank pass off the boards to a speeding Dupuis, who carries the puck into the zone but can't get a shot off.

19:39: The Pens penetrate the Bruins zone early and Letestu whips a backhander at Thomas that flies just over the net.

20:00: They're off at TD Garden! By the way, tonight marks Matt Cooke's 800th game. Congrats Matt!

FIRST PERIOD

7:05 PM: The Pens' lines:

Neal-Letestu-Kovalev
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Talbot-Jeffrey-Dupuis
Rupp-Adams-Conner

Martin-Michalek
Niskanen-Letang
Engelland-Lovejoy

6:48 PM:
Tim Thomas will get the nod between the pipes for the Bruins. He currently leads the NHL in save percentage (.940) and goals-against average (.940). Pretty impressive numbers.

6:45 PM: Welcome everyone! It's almost time to wrap up the Penguins' road trip, as tonight's game versus the Bruins at TD Garden is the last stop on their five-game swing.

The Penguins faced the NHL's hottest team in the New Jersey Devils last night, falling 2-1 in overtime to a squad that improved to 19-2-2 in their last 23 games.

And the going won't get any easier tonight. Because if the Devils are the league's hottest squad, the Bruins are a close second. Boston has won seven-straight games and is arguably the NHL's most balanced team from top to bottom.

Head coach Dan Bylsma stopped to talk to the media prior to the game. He announced that Marc-Andre Fleury will start in net and Chris Kunitz will not play tonight. Watch what else he had to say:
