Lemieux, Crosby honored at Dapper Dan

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
Mario Lemieux was named the best athlete in Pittsburgh’s rich sports history and Sidney Crosby received his second straight Sportsman of the Year award at the 72nd annual Dapper Dan Dinner Tuesday night at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

The theme of the dinner was sports history, in conjunction with the celebration of the city’s 250th anniversary.

Lemieux, a six-time NHL scoring champion who led the Penguins to Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, was the fans’ choice as the greatest athlete in the city’s history over a star-studded ballot that also featured Terry Bradshaw, Roberto Clemente, Tony Dorsett, Joe Greene, Dan Marino, Suzie McConnell-Serio, Arnold Palmer, Willie Stargell and Honus Wagner.

Crosby became only the second back-to-back winner of the award, joining former Pirates manager Danny Murtaugh.
