In-Game Blog: Pens vs. Devils

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
Pens representatives will be providing an ongoing in-game blog during Penguins games this season. Check back for updates, injury reports and information throughout the game.

9:46 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: That's the end of regulation with the Penguins and Devils tied, 1-1. Pittsburgh was outshot 20-2 in the third period. That's not a typo, 20-2. Commence overtime.

9:57 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Hal Gill tied the game at 1-1 when he deflected a Patrick Elias centering pass into the net behind Fleury. The Penguins goalkeeper had made 42 saves up until that point. The Penguins have surrendered 43 shots in the game while only getting 14 of their own. Pittsburgh has only two shots this period so far. Pens 1, Devils 1.

9:46 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: The Mellon Arena crowd let out a hearty boo as the Jumbotron displayed the out-of-town scores. The Detroit Red Wings 3-2 victory over Ottawa drew the ire of the fans.

9:45 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Fleury just became the first Penguins goalie to make a save with his buttocks. In a scramble around the net, he flopped facedown as the puck slid through the crease. A shot then deflected off his back on his rear. The sequence inspired a FLEURY FLEURY chant from the crowd.

9:40 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Orpik broke his stick in the defnsive zone. When Jamie Langenbrunner crashed the net for a rebound, Orpik did his best James Harrison impersonation and tackled him. Orpik got a two-minute penalty on the play, much to the displeasure of the crowd.

9:39 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Ruslan Fedotenko has been replaced on the Penguins top line by Pascal Dupuis.

9:34 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Pittsburgh is now nearly being outshot by a 3-to-1 margin. They're currently outshot 32-12 and haven't put a puck on Brodeur in this period. Fleury seems to be fighting the puck. He's let up a lot of rebounds and can't seem to collect some of the rebounds. He's survived so far.

9:11 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: The Penguins must have a brand new T-shirt shooter. One shot landed up in the Penguins party suite. Another shot nearly hit the roof before falling aimlessly into section D.

9:09 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Marc-Andre Fleury survived a late (bad pun alert) flurry around the net to keep the Devils scoreless after two. Pittsburgh was outshot 15-4 in the peroid. The Devils hold a 25-12 advantage through two periods.

8:56 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Pittsburgh is currently being outshot by a 2-to-1 margin in the game. The Devils have 22 shots against the Penguins 11. Sidney Crosby is only one goal away from reaching 100 for his career and seems determined to get it. He just had three quality scoring chances on Brodeur but couldn't cash in.

8:45 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: The Penguins failed in their first attempt to win a free Big Mac for the sellout crowd at Mellon Arena. In a promotion dubbed Big Mac Attack, fans all get a free Big Mac the following day if the Penguins scores during a specified two-minute interval. Pittsburgh is 0 for 1 on the season.

8:45 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Round 2 of Fight Night featured a bout between heavyweight Hal Gill and David Clarkson. Clarkson is six inches shorter than Gill but held his own, landing a few jabs to the head. Gill tried to respond but the linesmen broke up the fight. Score this round to Clarkson, if for nothing else, having the courage to go against Gill.

8:15 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Brooks Orpik and Patrick Elias caused a scrum behind the Penguins' net as the period expired. Elias took offense to a check by Orpik in front of the net and came after him after the period ended. The scuffled drew both teams players. The first period comes to an end with Pittsburgh leading, 1-0.

8:02 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: The Penguins get on the board first with a power play goal from Miroslav Satan at 11:52. Evgeni Malkin took a shot from the point and Satan stuffed in a Martin Brodeur rebound. Jordan Staal also had an assist on the goal. Pens 1, Devils 0.

7:49 EST, Saturday Oct. 11: Eric Godard and Michael Rupp squared off at center ice. Rupp got in a few early shots. Godard weathered the storm and countered with a few punches of his own. Eventually, Godard wrestled Rupp to the ground. Score the first round to Godard.

7:27 EST, Saturday Oct. 11:
The scratches for tonight's game were announced. The Devils scratched defensemen Sheldon Brookbank, Andy Greene and center Petr Vrana. Pittsburgh scratched forwards Paul Bissonnette, Petr Sykora and Bill Thomas.
