Adult Hockey Classic

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
This past weekend, the Pittsburgh Penguins held the first annual Penguins Adult Hockey Classic tournament presented by Labatt Blue and Trib Total Media. The event took place February 23rd through the 26th.

The Adult Classic brought together twenty-six adult hockey teams, competing in four different divisions: Emperor, Royal, Kings and Chinstraps, each division designating a species of penguin. Each team battled back and forth for a chance to raise the Labatt Blue barrel, which their team’s name would eventually be engraved onto. The winning teams also received a collectible mug along with bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Each team competed in the round-robin games at Ice Castle Arena in Castle Shannon, PA. Every team that entered in the tournament was guaranteed three games to play. Along with this, each member of the tournament was given a Labatt hockey glove bottle opener keychain, courtesy of Labatt Blue. Round-robin play led up to the game every team was competing to play in, the division championship games at Consol Energy Center.

Every player in the Adult Hockey Classic tournament was given a ticket to attend the Pittsburgh Penguins game on February 26, where the Pens took on the Columbus Blue Jackets. The players that made it to the finals on Sunday were given the chance to view the game in a party suite. After the game was over, the teams were escorted down to their locker rooms, where the division winners suited up for the Championship Games.

Before the start of the first game, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach, Dan Bylsma came out onto the ice to check out the action and ended up with a football in his hands. He then proceeded to throw the football back and forth, up into the stands, to the fans attending the Adult Hockey Classic. Also present was Bryan Trottier who had spent the afternoon in the party suite and stayed after the Pens game to drop the puck for the start of the first championship game.

With the games underway, teams played very competitively for the chance to raise the Labatt Barrel. Team captains were presented with the “Barrel” to lift it up and skate around, passing it off to teammates and showing it off to the fans. The champions in each division of the tournament will now have their team’s name engraved onto the Labatt Barrel, making their mark for future Adult Hockey Classics.
