For the third season, the Pittsburgh Penguins will team up with corporate partner Verizon Wireless to host a cell phone collection and increase awareness of the issue of domestic violence.
On Sunday, January 31, fans are encouraged to donate cell phones and accessories or make a monetary donation to benefit Womansplace, a local organization that provides assistance for women and their children affected by domestic violence. All models and brands of cell phones or accessories will be accepted at Gates 1, 3 and 10 of Mellon Arena and all fans that make a donation will have an opportunity to win autographed memorabilia.
Since this collection’s inception, fans have donated 1,117 cell phones and a variety of accessories; as well as more than $3,400. Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine program refurbishes and recycles the donated cell phones to help Womansplace by turning the unused wireless phones into lines of support for victims of domestic violence.
