Tough Day For Cats Prospects

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Matt Rust
Thursday was a rough day for the Panthers prospects as all four prospects that had teams playing saw their championship dreams come to an end.

Both North Dakota (Derrick LaPoint) and Michigan (Matt Rust) lost in the NCAA Frozen Four Semi-Finals as Boston College knocked off North Dakota 6-1 and the Cinderella team of the tournament, Notre Dame, won a thrilling 4-3 overtime affair over Michigan.

LaPoint was a scratch for the Fighting Sioux in their game while Rust helped Michigan mount a couple of comebacks against the Irish.

Down 3-0 after the first period, the Wolverines went to work in the second period. Michigan got on the board 8:48 into the second period and then just 15 seconds later, Rust pushed the puck past the Notre Dame netminder to bring Michigan to within one.

After tying the score at three, 2:46 into the third period, Notre Dame again took the lead at the 11:30 mark. Michigan again tied it with 5:21 left in the third as Rust’s wide shot hit the boards behind the net and to Carl Hagelin who threw it in off of the Irish goaltender.

But Notre Dame would eventually win it as Calle Ridderwall scored off a rebound 5:44 into the extra session.

Rust finished with a goal, assist, +2, and had 3 shots on net. The ESPN2 commentators mentioned numerous times how Rust was having a great game, as he was all over the ice causing havoc.

The season ended for the fifth-seed Guelph Storm and Panthers prospects Mike Caruso and Corey Syvret as the Storm lost a 4-1 decision to the Sault Ste. Marie Soo Greyhounds Thursday night. After winning the first game of the series, the Storm dropped their last four to the Greyhounds.

Guelph actually tallied the first goal of the game as Caruso set up Matt Kennedy just 3:44 into the contest. But then the Greyhounds got going and the Storm couldn’t find an answer. Saulte Ste. Marie tied the score at the 9:44 mark of the first period. SSM then scored twice in the second period (14:33 and 16:16 in) before adding the final tally 10:38 into the third period.

Caruso finished with the loan assist while Syvret was a -2 and was called for a roughing penalty 11:39 into the first period.

The second seeded Greyhounds will take on Panthers prospect Mike Duco and the top-seeded Kitchener Rangers in the OHL Western Conference Championship.
