The Great Playoff Debate: Round 2

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
After numerous right and wrong picks in the first round, Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein (FSN Florida) and Randy Moller (790 The Ticket) break down the second round playoff series.

The two will each pick a winner for each series and why they think that team will win. Moller holds a slight edge over Goldstein after the first-round picks, correctly guessing five series correctly to Goldstein's four. The duo each guessed a pair of series perfectly as Moller took Philadelphia in 7 and Colorado in 6 and Goldstein took Detroit in 6 and Pittsburgh in 4. FIRST ROUND PREDICTIONS

Randy Moller
"Red Deer" Randy Moller makes his Conference Semis picks.

Eastern Conference Semis

Montreal vs Philadelphia… Nobody expected the Flyers to get past Ovechkin and the Caps, but Daniel Briere led all scorers in the playoff's 1st round with 11 points, and Martin Biron was steady in goal. The Canadians were pushed to Game 7 of their series with the Bruins, but should be better for it in the end. Montreal swept the Flyers four-straight in the regular season, and will continue that trend... Canadians in 5

Pittsburgh vs NY Rangers… The NHL is loving this series, with all the superstar subtitles attached. Crosby and Malkin vs Jagr and Gomez. What "young stud" goaltender will come out on top? "King" Henrik Lundqvist was not tested in the Ranger/Devil series, but will see plenty of rubber this time around. Penguins have home ice advantage, and will need it. Rangers Sean Avery will not be a factor… Penguins in 6

Western Conference Semis

Colorado vs Detroit… Red Wings were put to the test in their 1st-round win over Nashville, and had to rely on Chris Osgood's excellent goaltending, after replacing Dominik Hasek in Game 5, just to advance. Coach Mike Babcock is worried about his troops, and rightfully so. Colorado has been resilient all season long. Now healthy, Joe Sakic and grizzly veteran Ryan Smith look sharp. Av's netminder Jose Theodore stopped 188 of 200 shots posted by Minnesota in the 1st-round win. If Theodore continues to dominate, Colorado will win in 6

San Jose vs Dallas… Jumbo Joe Thorton is starting to heat up at the right time, and his Sharks look like the fastest team in this year's "big dance". Newcomer power forward Ryan Clowe has been a surprise force, and Evgeni Nabokov is still playing up to his Vezina Trophy nominee caliber. The Stars scored 10 power play goals in their 1st series win over last year's Cup champs, the Ducks of Anaheim. Marty Turco will have to be brilliant in goal, and Brad Richards has to post another 5-plus points in this physical series. Dallas in 7

Steve Goldstein
And Steve "Goldie" Goldstein counters with his own.

Looks like Molller and I will go opposite ways...what else is new!?!

Eastern Conference Semis

Montreal vs Philadelphia... Series of teams that needed seven tough games to win opening rounds. I was there for game 7 in Washington and the Flyers earned a new respect from me. I have not been in an atmosphere like that since the Cats were beating the Flyers and Penguins in the old Miami barn in '96! Flyers hung tough in Game 7 and eliminated Ovechkin and the Caps. Marty Biron is hot in goal and the Montreal native is going home. He will be motivated. Flyers go into Montreal and take Game 7.

Pittsburgh vs NY Rangers... Love this series as it pits stars against each other. We know the Pens have the young superstars in Sid the Kid and Malkin. It goes 7 and really can go either way but I say the Rangers young, underrated players come through. Brandon Dubinsky & Marc Staal emerge & NY takes Game 7 on a Chris Drury game-winner.

Western Conference Semis

Detroit vs Colorado... Rivalry resumes with another playoff series between bitter rivals. Too bad for Sakic and Forsberg that it’s 2008 and not 1998! Red Wings have that great blue line & are on their way to winning the Cup. Detroit motors through in 6.

San Jose vs Dallas... So much for Joe Thorton and Marty Turco not being able to win the big one. Both were huge in first round wins and now they go head to head. Stars dominated Anaheim and that's good enough for me. Dallas dominates in 5.
