SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin announced today that Jack Birch has been named the club’s director of player personnel/pro scout.  Birch, who enters his fifth year with the organization, will be responsible for overseeing the hockey operations for the Panthers American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester, as well as scouting NHL players.

“Over the last several years, Jack has played an important role in handling the hockey operations decisions surrounding our minor league affiliates,” said Martin. “In this expanded role he will work closely with our affiliates in both Rochester and Florida to ensure that our younger players continue to properly develop and mature on their respective teams.”

Since joining the organization in 2004, Birch has served the club in several capacities that included both pro scout (2007-08) and director of hockey operations (2004-07). Prior to joining the Panthers organization, he served as president of J.B. Scouting Service. His worldwide scouting service specialized in the evaluation and rankings of players at the professional and amateur levels throughout North America and Europe.

The Peterborough, Ontario native began his career in the National Hockey League serving as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers from 1985-87. Birch joined the NHL Central Scouting Bureau in 1989, working as a scouting consultant to the director of CSB and for several NHL teams. He spent three years with the CSB, before joining the Vancouver Canucks in 1992. Birch served as an amateur scout for the Canucks from 1992-97, before being promoted to the club’s director of amateur scouting from 1997-99.

Upon graduating with a Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, Birch coached varsity hockey at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In 1982 he was named as the head coach of his alma mater.

Birch and his wife Michele reside in Boca Raton, Florida. He has two children, Joanna and Braden.
