My prayers are with you Richard. Your unfortunate incident really enforces just how thin the ice is that we skate on. At the blink of an eye it could be gone. I'm so glad that you have survived this, and look forward to seeing on the ice soon.

Hello Richard:

I was horrified to see what had happened to you at the Sabres game. However, your quick reaction to get to the bench and seek medical aid was, without a shadow of a doubt, what saved your life and kept you in this eternal hockey rink called life. Like all fans of the NHL including myself, I am so happy to hear that youre recovering well from what surely wouldve been a fatal injury.

The most important thing is that youre okay and well on the way to recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Get better...We'll see you on the ice soon enough :-)

it doesn't matter who i am a fan of, what team, what player...the fact is you are a human being, who was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and unfortunately was injured in a terrible way. thank god you had the presence of mind to skate to the bench, and get the help you needed. god bless, and i hope your recovery is speedy, and you get to full strength soon.

I am very glad to see that your surgery went well last night! I was watching the game on NHL Center Ice and was terrified at what I saw. I am very happy to know you will be ok.

You are definitely in my prayers.

Dan - Minneapolis, Minnesota
I first want to say my family and my thoughts are with richard and his family. i am a huge hockey fan and never have i seen anything like this. you hear about it possibly happening, but thankfully never see it, until now. i am a die hard penguins fan. i had a numbness fall over me when i heard about this incident. hockey is still "just a game". its a game. the guys that play are human beings. fathers, brs, uncles, nephews and husbands. they feel pain no matter who they play for. this one incident alone should make us from pittsburgh think about crosby's injury. we are lucky that sid only has a high ankle sprain. florida has a guy in the Intensive Care Unit. Richard. i hope to see you on the ice. and if you are back on the ice, i will be in pittsburgh to see you. good luck and god bless. get well soon

Adan - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

My thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. As a long-time Sabres fan, I well remember the very scary injury sustained by Clint Malarchuk, which occurred when I was in high school. Fortunately, I also remember seeing Clint lifting weights (far more than I am able to lift to this day!) only a few months later at the gym I belonged to. I hope that you have an equally swift and complete recovery.

Best wishes.
David - Cleveland, Ohio

Hey Richard,

So glad to hear you're doing well. You did well getting off the ice! Thankfully you had the best help you ever could have, ready to go.

I know a guy that had the same thing happen years ago, and he's now still the same grumpy, rotten SOB that he ever was, so I'm sure it won't be long until you're back at it.

Get better soon!

My thoughts and Prayers are with you and your family in your time of difficulty. You are more than an inspirational and amazing hockey player, but an inspirational person. In your year as a panther's player you have shown yourself to be a leader and great teammate. The courage you displayed after your injury by getting to the bench was inspiring. My family and I are truly grateful to have you as a member of our favorite hockey team and community. We are praying for your speedy and complete recovery.

Lorenzo - Montreal, Canada
So glad to hear that your surgery was successful last night. Its hard to see something like that, let alone have it happen to you. Kind of reminds everyone that it's just a game and you guys are out there risking your lives nightly. Get well soon Zednik, and dont come back until your healed and ready!

Curtis - Nanaimo, Canada
As a hockey fan, I send best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Richard.

Diane - Boston, Massachusetts
Mr. Zednik,

I hope you have a fast recovery, and I am very happy that you are doing okay. I was at the game last night with my br. I was telling him just before the game that you have really been playing great lately and the Sabres were going to need to watch out for you. As a Sabres fan since birth, I have come to respect you greatly over the years when you were with the Canadiens and now with the Panthers. I was, unfortunately at the game in 1989 with my same br when our goalie Clint Malarchuk had the same thing happen to him. I was 11 years old and my br was 7 at the time. Its something that will never leave your memory. I know our doctors here are some of the best, and I glad they got to you so quickly to save you. I thought it was absolutely amazing that you skated that far to the bench. I don't think most people would be able to do that. Your quick thinking saved your life too. I love hockey more than anything else in this world(except my wife and two children of course), and I know you do too. If you decide to retire, I think everyone will understand. This is going to be hard to come back from, I know. If you keep playing, I will cheer for you for the rest of your career. You are an exceptional player, and I wish you all the best.

Shane Bradley - Buffalo, New York
While not a Panthers fan, I'm a hockey fan, and as such..you hate to hear of something like this happening to any player.
I wish you and your family all the best and speedy recovery.
Thank God you are ok, and hope to see you back on the ice soon :)

Sharon - Calgary, AB, Canada

My sons and I were watching game highlights as usual, and we were shocked to see what had happened to you during the game. You obviously are a survivor as your instincts told you to get to the bench for help.

I beleive that things happen for a reason, it may take a while to figure this one out though. It seems you have great support from your teammates and the Panthers Organization .... that is a blessing. Know that you and your family are in our thoughts, and we wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Keep strong.

Richard-

I am a 7 year Season Ticketholder in Buffalo, and was present with my wife during your injury last night.

I want to let you know that our thoughts & prayers are with you, and that we hope for your speedy recovery.

As a hockey fan, I have admired your play, and look forward to you making it back to the ice some day.

As a person, I can say that my emotions ran the gamut last night. Being alive during a similar injury (yet again in Buffalo) to Clint Malarchuk and witnessing it on TV, as well as the more recent Kevin Everett injury this past NFL season, I was in shock to see something so severe happen once again.

I am thankful that you received prompt medical attention. I am amazed that you had the strength to get yourself to the bench to be saved. I am very happy you are alive to play an day.

Please rest up & get better, and come back soon.

Ron - West Seneca, New York
I was at the game with my dad. We were 14 rows from the ice.Terrible thing to happen to anyone. Rest up,get better and hopefully we see you back on the ice soon.

I was watching the replay of the terrible accident on the NHL channel last night. It was absolutely horrifying. It brought tears to my eyes, as well as most of the Buffalo fans in the stadium. As fans, we love the extreme action, fights, etc.... of the sport. But we never want to see anyone from any team injured, especially so severely. Just wanted to send my thoughts to you and your family for a quick recovery.

Dianne - Chino, California
Best wishes, An Anaheim Ducks Fan!

You take care, and whatever happens after this happens, hopefully we will see you back out on the ice. But taking care of yourself is the most important thing, and listen to your wife!

Hi Richard,

I have been following you for over a decade now and never dropped a line, but I think it's about time. I thought I was a tough cookie, but what I've seen last night left me breathless. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know how much I respect you as a hockey player and how much I admire you as a person. You may not be recognized as a top-scorer, but you definitely should be recognized for the effort that you put into every game, I certainly appreciate that above everything else. You are a true fighter and that probably saved your life. Your horrific accident just gave an meaning to the game of hockey,it has brought the best in people. Let's all hope that your most memorable hockey moment is yet to come.

Best wishes to you and your family,
Miroslav - Bratislava, Slovakia
Hope you recover quickly. My prayers are with you.

Kyle - Chino, California
What happened to you was indeed scary, but has also shown all of us hockey fans just what kind of "stuff" hockey players are made of. How you had the presence of mind to get to the bench so quickly is amazing. It also shows us the dangers of the sport that we as fans often overlook as we watch our favorite teams play. It reminds us that all of you who play this sport that we all love, come so close to danger every time you put on your skates.I for one will never forget the strength and courage you showed and that all NHL players show at every game. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. God bless you and your family and I hope you get back in the lineup soon.

Barb - Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Dear Richard,

I always enjoyed watching you play and held you in high regard as an elite player in the NHL. Following the game, I was playing XBox hockey, as I usually do after Sabres games. But this time around, I chose to play as the Panthers, whereas I normally play as the Sabres, so I could give you some extra ice time. That way my prayers would also remain with you. This was a scary things for many, both players, coaches and fans. We all wish you well.

Richard,

I got to go to my first winter hawks game as a christmas present, it was my first time watching a high level of hockey in person and it was mesmerizing. To this day the one thing I remember most about that game is you. I was impressed with how quick of a skater you were, not just speed but acceleration, you were on the tips of your skates in an instant and that kind of heart and determination was inspiring. Since that day I've been a fan of you personally, as well as the Portland winter hawks organization. I hope that same heart and determination I saw on the ice is with you in this most trying of times. I have full confidence you will fully recover, after all you went from being a 10th round pick to an NHL mainstay, that sort of accomplishment doesn't come easy. Just wanted you to know there are a lot of us out here in portland concerned and we want to wish you the best. Hope you remember the left coast, we'd love to have you back sometime in the future. Get better Richard, the game needs players like you.

James - Portland, Oregon

Steven - Vancouver, Canada
Richard,

I was one of the many s who witnessed the terrible accident on television. I was stunned and frightened to see what happened, and I could not believe what I was watching. Although it was gut wrenching to watch, I am also amazed that you had will power and brains to skate off on your own (and with help from your fellow teammates) to the bench after something so stunning had just happened to you. I could not imagine what must have been going through your head at the time, and I was extremely relieved and happy to hear that you were in stable condition and being taken to the hospital.

I'm glad that you're now comfortably resting and wish you the very best and hope for a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with you, your family, friends, and teammates at this time. Get well soon!

Dear Richard,
Last night was a scary moment for yourself, the fans, and the game of hockey in general. No one ever wants to think that something to that magnitude could ever happen in a game of hockey but we all saw first hand just how dangerous the game really is. I want to wish you to the best of health and be able to come back to the game of hockey with the same tenacidy, strength, and skill you did when you joined the NHL and your abrupt departure yesterday.

I am sure I speak for everyone in the Hockey community when we are all rooting for your return to be a fast and healthy recovery. You have been playing in the professional hockey leagues around the world from the Portland Winterhawks, Washington Capitals, Montreal Candians, Zvolen HKm (during the lock-out year)a brief stint with the Islanders and now a team you call Home with the Florida Panthers. And now to see you out of the line up just throws the whole idea of hockey out of wak.

From Toronto, i wish you a safe recovery and best of wishes to your health.

First off, you may not know me, or many of us sending you these messages. But I would like to say that all of us were extremely and equally horrified to see what had happened right at that instant. I was speechless. Watching you skate off the ice I thought we'd lose you forever. We can only thank god that gave you the strength to skate all the way to that bench, you are a true hero Richard. You are very brave. All of us over at the message boards were extremely scared, and when we got the news that you were ok, a huge burden was lifted. Once again, I am so glad to hear you were ok. I cant imagine what you were going through, and your family as well. Thank god you are alive and well, and we shall pray for a speedy recovery. God bless.

Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery, Richard. I hope that you are back on your feet again soon.

Although I have rooted against you and your reputation as a Bruin-killer in the past, your injury goes far beyond a fan's loyalty to a team. I am a hockey fan first and foremost, and was shocked to learn of your horrific injury. Congratulations on your presence of mind to skate to your bench as soon as it happened. It may have saved your life.

Nobody likes to be confronted with their own mortality, but it must be especially difficult for a professional athlete who is in top physical condition. Kudos to the Panthers organization for rushing your wife to your side during this frightening time.

I eagerly await your triumphant return to the ice. I just have one favor to ask of you. Take it easy on my Bruins, OK? ;)

Reg - Enfield, New Hampshire

RICHARD, I HAVE SEEN VIRTUALLY EVERY GAME YOU HAVE PLAYED AS A PANTHER EITHER IN PERSON OR ON TV.I WATCHED IN DISBELIEF ON TV AS THIS UNFOLDED . I HAVE COMMENTED NUMEROUS TIMES TO THE FELLOW PANTHER FANS THAT I SIT BY IN SECTION 424 THAT " IF EVERYONE PLAYED AS HARD EVERY SHIFT AS RICHARD ZEDNIK AND DAVID BOOTH THE PANTHERS WOULD NEVER LOSE A GAME" RICHARD, I HAVE NEVER SEEN YOU " TAKE A SHIFT OFF" AND I AM SURE THIS " SHIFT " WILL BE NO EXCEPTION. YOU WILL BEAT THIS. I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR QUICK RECOVERY AND YOUR RETURN TO THE GAME YOU LOVE. YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS, PAUL

PAUL - SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Florida
Richard,
Your accident was as freak as ive seen and I hope that your recovery goes as quickly and as smoothly as possible!
I hope that the league realizes that players should wear neck guards, comfortable or not, because these incidents should never, ever take place on the ice. Your quick thinking in skating straight to the bench after it occured was remarkable.
Again, I wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to again seeing you in NHL action sooner, rather than later.

Adam - Leafs Nation, Toronto.

Dear Richard,

Richard,

You and your family are in my prayers. I'm from Sweden but I'm here in the US right now to watch Panthers hockey, so whenever you see one of your players go down, it hurts inside. The way you dealt with the situation, skating right to the bench was remarkable and you showed a lot of bravery. Friends and family back in Sweden have seen the incident too and they think about, and pray for you as well.

Some things just put life into a whole new perspective and this was definitely one of those things. Hockey is amazing, but it's not as amazing as life. I hope you will find the strength to get back to everyday life.

Here's my wishing you and your family a speedy recovery, physically and mentally. I think I speak for all Panthers fans when I say that I'm glad and proud to have you on this team.

Take care,
Simon - Coral Springs, Florida
T o Richard , my thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family as you endure this traumatic experience. may you heal sucessfully and continue with the sport you excel in and love and all of us here in buffalo are rooting for you to overcome this and make a full recovery. as well as the concern the city of buffalo shows toward this, there is also a great deal of admiration and respect towards the strength your teamates showed in being able to continue on with the game no matter how difficult it may have been. god bless you and know the next time you arrive in buffalo, you will surely recieve the applause you recieved when you left the ice last.

Brigetta - Buffalo , New York

Richard,

My sincerest prayers go out to you and your family. Thank God your quick thinking led to a rapid arrival at the bench! It was quite frightening to see your injury, but your actions and those of the medical staff certainly did a lot to save your life. I play hockey myself, and watching your injury has finally convinced me of the merits of a neckguard. Though I am a loyal Penguins fan and not a huge supporter of the Panthers, I hope to see you back in the lineup soon. Though it must be frustrating, be patient with your recovery and await the day of your triumphant return. You are an amazing player, and your story has only gotten more inspirational. Good luck with your recovery and the rest of the season.

God Bless,

Dannielle and the rest of the 'Burgh - Sewickley, Pennsylvania
Speedy recovery Richard! I'm so glad you're going to be okay.

Richard,
I'm really sorry about the accident and I'm glad you're doing okay. It was a freak accident that you really don't want to think something like that will happen, but it does. I am a goalie in youth hockey and will think about you whenever i get on the ice.

I can't believe you even skated to the bench when it happenned, I guess that proves that hockey players are REALLY TOUGH!

Take care and hope you are all healed up soon!
Henry, Syracuse, NY

Hi Richard,

I'm just glad you're alive. Get well soon!

Jeremy - Calgary Alberta, Canada
Hey Richard : In hockey, as in many sports, there are risks. With the amount of people engaging in the sport, there are bound to be some severe injuries. So your number had to come up. But with a little time, you can come back, just as strong as you were before this unfortunate incident happened. Hope you are able to recover quickly and re-join your team!

Brian - Peterborough, Canada
Holy lord, that was just amazing. I have a son that plays in the AJHL, and he just had the same thing happen to him and if it was 1 mm deeper it would have went right thru the jugular and he would have bled out on the ice, as in JR. A, they don't have the medical staff like you have. It was the worst phone call I have ever gotten that my son has just cut his jugular.

I wish you a speedy recovery and to see ya back on the ice again soon. Please take care of your self and for god sakes get a freaking neck guard on, Hahahahahahahaaha. Like my sone said, I will not look like the only dork on the ice with a neck gaurd. But in all seriousness, I think they may be a smart thing to put on at all levels.

All the best fella.

Oly Olsen - Salt Lake City, , Utah
On behalf of the entire Canucks family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.

Richard - Vancouver, Canada
Richard, Jessica, and the Panthers Family,
Richard, it is never easy to see anything happen to a professional hockey player, much less what you had to deal with. Your clear thinking and quick response are now legendary. I hope if I am ever in the same situation on the ice, I will be as amazing as you were yesterday. I hope that you and your wife take all the time you need to recover; your health is the most important item to focus on. I hope you recover quickly and we will be able to see you back in all your glory before long. I have watched you for many years, and I cannot wait to watch you for many more. Jessica, keep your chin up. You are a beautiful strong woman, and Richard is going to need all of your strength right now.
You have all our love and prayers from Colorado's hockey community.

to richard

i hope you are feeling alright and i hope to see u back on the ice soon i feel like the nhl needs a nice good player like you

love

Donna - Saugus, Massachusetts
Let me just say, you did a great job in the game against the Sabres sunday. I honestly thought we were gonna lose once you guys caught up to us. You guys might've, but after what happened to you, who can blame anybody for not focusing on the least important thing at the time, especially a team mate. A team is like a family, so I'm sure to your teammates they wanted to check on your condition, not the game. Just being there and seeing what happened and the reaction of people, something I will not forget anytime soon. But it did show me that nobody is invinceable and safety is number one. A lesson I will not forget ever again. But I pray that you will recover soon and be just as healthy before this terrible innicedent ever occur. And that you can return to the sport you love so much and that is a big part of your life, hockey. Get better soon! :)

Christina - Buffalo, New York

Richard,

A get well message from Montreal ,Quebec. You were my son's favorite player when you were with the Canadiens. As a matter of fact you still remain at the top of his list even though you were moved.
It is always exiting for us when we get to see a Panther's game as my son loves to watch you play. Your autographed picture card hangs produly on the wall in his bed room.

We would both like to wish you a sucessful and speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing you back out on the ice.

Take care and get well soon!

Carol Shore and Michael Ryan - Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Dear Zed,

Since you joined the Florida Panthers, I have always had a passion for your play. It's been great to have you added to our roster. After seeing what happened last night, I felt the pain that clearly any hockey fan would feel. Even non-hockey fans for this matter. At this point, I didn't care anymore about the game. I cared about what happened to you. Everyone felt worried, scared, shocked, and confused. The message boards were exploding with many worried thoughts.

I go to a private school here in palm beach county, and basically about 5 people here are real true hockey fans. I went to school today, expecting noone to really know or talk about it, but I was very surprised. A lot of people were talking about it, and it meant a lot. It meant that many people actually cared what happened to you. We even prayed for you, we felt so bad.

I really hope you are recovering fast so we can see you back out there. Hopefully this won't ruin your career of thinking about the sport. I'm sure it wont, but it will be tough to get over. And this is why so many fans care about you. Not for what you did, but for who you are.

From Kyle(hockeydude1), panthers message boards(especially ZednikFan), and everyone else that cares, we hope you get well soon.

Kyle - Boynton Beach, Florida
We all feel with you, Richard. Hope to see you home soon :)

Pavol - Bratislava, Slovakia
What team you're a fan of doesn't matter one bit when incidents like this occur. It's when an entire league comes together.

I wish you a speedy recovery Richard, get better soon. Hopefully you find the strength to continue to play hockey.

Greetings from Belgium.

Mr. Zednik: sorry about your neck, hope you get well soon.

The fact that you got up, applied pressure immediately, and skated under your own power to the bench is just amazing to me.

You were very smart to get to the bench on your own, very admirable. I had you in my pool once and think you are a great hockey player, although I didn't like it when you 'spanked' my leafs last week :-( ....God bless you.

Dear Richard:

Being able to only see highlights, or in this case lowlights of yesterdays game, I can only imagine the thoughts running through your head at the time of the incident.
The fact that you had enough mind to do what you did, obviously proves that you are a very intelligent person and I wish you nothing but the best in the future.
Many players in hockey these days have suffered far less threatening injuries than yours and have fallen to the ice. You showed incredible courage and stength and I truly hope you are able to make a full recovery and return to the ice as soon as possible.

Best of luck and my thoughts are with you and your family during your recovery!!!

Sincerely,
Jay Fendley - Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Dear Richard,
Oh my God, what a scary moment that was for me and my family watching the game yesterday. I am so happy you are OK. Being a season ticket holder since 1993 I have had the pleasure(or should I say pain) of watching you with the Caps, Canadiens and Islanders over the past years have much success against us. When I learned in the off season you had signed with the Cats, I was so extatic if for nothing else, that you would not continue to beat us but instead help us. And just as your game is coming on strong now you are met with such a unfortunate incident..but the most important thing is that you are OK!...and I hope to see you back soon with the team helping us not only get to the playoffs but to also make strides within. Also I must say you have a GREAT FIRST NAME! Again, most anxious for your return in good health!

Richard Bard - Plantation, Florida
Have a quick recovery Rich. Extremely glad to hear you'll be ok.

I was watching the game and it's so sad for you to be injured. You have been doing so well these past weeks and I am going to see the game Friday against the Capitols. I'm so sad that you won't be in the line-up. Please get better, and take your time and come back as strong as you left us!

Your Fan,
Shannon - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Hi Risa! I don't know if my first message will displayed here, cause I've written it in Czech, not English. I just wanna say to you that I and sure all guys from my hockey team wish that you'll be ok soon and you'll be playing again so good. You're not just a strong player, you're also a strong person because you didn't fall down and you kept going to the bench with hand on your throat...it was amazing. Get well soon!

Leos - Trebic, Czech Republic
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Can't wait till we see you on the ice again.

God bless all those that were involved in helping to save you.

Brian - Billings, Montana
Richard,

You cannot believe how relieved myself and my family feel knowing that you are now on the road to recovery. Regardless of who your favorite team is, I hope that accidents like that are far and few between. My family and I watch hockey almost every night and you never really think how dangerous hockey can be. After your accident none of us really cared if the game continued or if was called. All anyone wanted to hear was that you were on your way to the hospital and that all would be ok.
You and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers since last night. I wish you a speedy recovery and may God bless you and your family.

Sincerely,
Mary Smith - Cato, New York
Dear Richard Zednik,

I've been a fan of yours since your first games in Washington, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching you play since then. I've followed you with great admiration and wonder, while you were there, in Montreal, in New York, and now in Florida. I remember, when I was 8 years old, watching your speed and your perseverance on the ice, and, being a Slovakian citizen myself, you instantly became a hockey hero for me; since then, as a hockey player myself, I've modeled my game after yours and your speed.

I know that this is tough, that the injury you just experienced was life threatening, but, Richard, you've shown me and the hockey world before that you can bounce back from tough situations and injuries.

Regardless, I want you to know that I believe in your ability to come back from this injury, and resume your remarkable career. You've been a force everywhere that you've played, and you're a wonderful example for young hockey players.

My heart and mind is with you and your family during these difficult times.

My warmest and best wishes,
Jonathan Levi - New York, NY
Good luck Richard!!

Phil - Laval, Canada
Richard, I admire you! You established too in the threatening situation to stand up and skate. You are really

I want only say God bless you .

Majo - Rajec, Slovakia
I was very concerned to hear about Richard's incident in last night's game and most relieved after hearing that his condition was stable and that he was being taken care of by professional medics.
This was just about the worst thing I could've ever expected to hear about in the NHL and I can't really say how glad I am that nothing worse occured.

All the best wishes to Richard and to his family, and congratulations on his awesome comeback to the scoreboards.
