KARL ALZNER Defenseman Calgary(Western Hockey League) 6-2, 209 pounds
While there isn’t a consensus No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, there seems to be agreement that Karl Alzner is one of the few players in the 2007 draft class capable of playing next season in the NHL.
“He’s probably the most ready to play of all the defensemen in this year’s draft,” said Scott Luce, the Panthers’ director of scouting. “He has above average skill.”
There’s a lot to like about Alzner. He’s steady defensively but also has an upside when it comes to his offense. The 6-2, 210-pound native of Burnaby, British Columbia had 39 assists and eight goals last year with Calgary Hitmen.
Central Scouting says Alzner is “calm under pressure and composed with the puck,” but needs to “improve his acceleration and his ability to change tempo throughout the game.”
If Alzner could have dinner with any three people, he would chose defenseman Scott Niedermayer, country singer Taylor Swift and actor Owen Wilson.
