In the playoffs, penalties can cost a team.

And for Rochester, that's exactly what happened against Abbotsford in the first game of round one of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Abbotsford scored three times in the first, including twice on the power play, on their way to a 3-2 victory over Rochester to take Game 1.

The Amerks would net two power play goals of their own, but their second with 27 seconds left in the game by Mike York proved to be not enough for the home team.

The Heat jumped on the board 35 seconds into the contest as Keith Seabrook recorded the lone five-on-five goal of the game. His shot from the point beat Alexander Salak high above the glove hand. The visitors would make it 2-0 8:16 in when Tyler Spurgeon deflected a shot past Salak on a Heat power play attempt. It would be just one of 11 power play attempts on the night.

“You can’t expect to win when you spend most of the time in the box," said Amerks Head Coach Benoit Groulx to Amerks.com.

Rochester would get on the board and cut the score in half when defenseman Jordan Henry slammed home a rebound for the power-play goal with 4:28 left in the first. Abbotsford would regain the two goal lead after one period of play as Seabrook netted his second of the night on another Heat power play with 1:43 left.

"They're fast," winger Jeff Taffe told Kevin Oklobzija of the Democrat And Chronicle. "They play well as a five-man unit and they play really well five-on-four."

That would be it for Salak as he was pulled after one period of play after allowing three goals on nine shots Tyler Plante took over and held the Heat off the scoresheet the rest of the game, stopping 20 shots. Former Panther draft pick David Shantz got the start for the Heat and would stop 30 shots in the contest.

With their goalie pulled and on a power play, York potted the final goal of the game.

NOTES: Rochester was playing in their first playoff game since 2007...Rochester finished the game going 2 for 8 on the power play while Abbotsford was 2 for 11...Jason Garrison picked up an assist on York's late tally.
