SUNRISE, Fla. – The South Florida chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association announced today they have selected F Peter Mueller as the Florida Panthers nomination for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an annual award under the trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association and is given to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Mueller, 24, has played in 42 games with the Panthers this season recording 17 points (8-9-17), while leading the team with 125 shots. He recorded a career best four-game goal scoring streak (Jan. 26-Feb. 3), while also recording multiple points in four games this season.
After suffering two separate concussions, that caused him to miss the entire 2010-2011 season and more than half of the 2011-2012 season, Mueller has not missed a game due to injury this season. He missed five games (Apr. 11 & Apr. 16-21) for the birth of his first child earlier this month.
The Bloomington, Minnesota native, was drafted by Phoenix in the first round (8th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Mueller was signed by Florida as an unrestricted free agent on July 11, 2012.
A grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minn., in the name of the Masterton Trophy winner. The trophy was presented by the NHL Writers' Association in 1968 to commemorate the late William Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited, to a high degree, the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton died on Jan. 15, 1968, after an injury sustained during a game.
