by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. Florida Panthers Executive Vice President & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to a two-year contract extension with D Mike Weaver.
“Mike is a high-character, hard-working defenseman who we are glad to have re-signed,” said Tallon. “He is a responsible player, who has proven to play an integral role on our penalty kill. We look forward to his continued contributions to our organization.”
Weaver, 33, has played in 119 games with Florida since being signed as a free agent on Aug. 3, 2010, scoring two goals with 20 assists and 40 PIM. He currently ranks second on the club in blocked shots (62) and sixth on the team in ice time (19:44). Weaver was one of only four Panthers players to appear in all 82 games with the Panthers last season, while finishing first on the team in blocked shots (132).
For his career in the National Hockey League, Weaver has appeared in 458 NHL contests with Atlanta (2001-04), Los Angeles (2005-07), Vancouver (2007-08), St. Louis (2008-10) and Florida (2010-current) registering 64 points (6-58-64) and 174 PIM.
The Bramalea, Ont., native won a Calder Cup with the Chicago Wolves (AHL) in 2002 and the Orlando Solar Bears (IHL) in 2001. Prior to turning pro, Weaver played four seasons of college hockey at Michigan State University.
Florida hosts the New York Rangers tonight at 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on FOX Sports Florida and heard on 560 WQAM.
