Cats Acquire Two D, Pick

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
The Panthers announced Friday evening that they have traded captain Olli Jokinen to the Phoenix Coyotes for defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton as well as the Coyote’s second round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (49th).

Boynton, a 29-year old Nobleton, Ontario native had 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in 79 games with the Coyotes during the 2007-08 season. The eight-year NHL veteran has 107 points (27 goals, 80 assists) in 437 NHL games.

"Boynton is defensive minded," said Darren Pang, Versus and Coyotes broadcaster.

Ballard, a 25-year old Baudette, Minnesota native and former 1st-round pick has spent all three of his NHL seasons with the Coyotes, playing in 233 games while registering 87 points (19 goals, 68 assists).

"Keith Ballard is an exceptional skater and a very complete player. The kid cares like every shift is his last shift. There's more offensive upside there," said Pang.
