Kitchener, Ontario – All looked well for the Florida Panthers after they scored three of the first four goals against Pittsburgh on the second day of rookie camp at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. But even though they witnessed the Pens remarkable 6-5 comeback win over Toronto the night before, the Cats could do nothing to stop Pittsburgh’s second and third period surge in a 6-3 loss.

Florida Everblades (ECHL) pivot David Brine staked the Cats to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals just three minutes into the game. Then, just eight minutes after Pittsburgh’s Tim Wallace cut the lead in half, Brine fed linemate Keegan Dansereau to make it 3-1 Cats.

But the Penguins struck early in the second period with a Jonathan Filewich tally to make it 3-2 at 7:56 and a Kyle Rank goal just a minute later knotted the game at three. Pittsburgh would add another second period goal when Alex Grant scored to give the Pens a 4-3 lead heading to intermission. Pitt then added two more tallies in the third period for a total of five unanswered goals.

The loss drops Florida to 1-1 on the four-team tournament while the Pens move to 2-0. Brine led the Cats with two goals and one assist and is now tied for third in the tourney in scoring. His line, with Calgary (WHL) wing Dansereau (1 goal, 2 assists) and 2005 first round pick Kenndal McArdle accounted for all three of the Panthers goals on the afternoon.

David Shantz got his first start in goal for Florida making 33 saves in the losing effort. The Cats are in action again tomorrow night when they take on the hometown favorite Toronto Maple Leafs at 6:30 p.m. Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL) netminder Tyler Plante is expected to get the strart after holding Ottawa to just one goal in a 2-1 Cats win on Friday. The Panthers need a win to secure a spot in Monday’s Championship game.
