A Scout's Eye: Almost There

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
A Scout's Eye is a blog written by Panthers Director of Amateur Scouting Scott Luce as he takes you behind the scenes of what a scout really goes through as they prepare for their big holiday, the NHL Entry Draft. Scouts are the reason for the home-grown product, those players that are drafted by the team and then make a huge difference for them.

Luce is in his fifth year with the Panthers, after joining the club's scouting staff on July 11, 2002. He oversees the club's amateur scouts and works closely with Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin, tracking prospects throughout the world.

Luce has been responsible for the Panthers drafting notable players such as Nathan Horton, Rostislav Olesz, David Booth, Michael Frolik, and Michal Repik.

Six and a half hour drive from London with two Tim Horton stops and Luke Williams and I arrive in Ottawa at our Hotel. Along the way we had several lengthy conversations about our list and the various scenarios that we will be discussing over the next few days. We spoke at length on our new coach as both Luke and I have seen Peter coach for several seasons in the OHL.
Tonight, I will unpack and prepare the War Room for a full day of meetings on Wednesday where we will do our final massage of our 2008 Draft List. Not having a First Round selection, we will have many more "What if " discussions as compared to Mock Drafts. This will be a first for our staff, and has already lead to many interesting debates.
Thursday we will be interviewing several prospects that we feel may be on the board with our various selections. Some will be follow up interviews, some will be first time interviews and others will be done to address specific concerns such as fitness or off ice character.
Friday morning will see our interviews wrap up as we prepare to head to the Draft. Traffic will be hectic heading to the Draft, so we will leave early and arrive in plenty of time.
I am confident that we will land a significant prospect at 31. This is a deep draft and our staff is well prepared for any scenarios that may arise. Things will heat up here, so I will touch base with you after the Draft and provide some feedback then.
Scott Luce
