EDMONTON, AB -Connor McDavid put on a show for fans at Rexall Place, scoring five goals for Team White as they downed Team Blue 8-6 at the third annual Billy Moores Cup.
“It was fun," said McDavid. "Anytime you get a chance to play in front of fans like that it’s always exciting. Obviously, it was pretty competitive just with the guys that we have. There are great players out there.”
It was no surprise to see McDavid’s name pop up first on the score sheet. The 2015 first-overall pick showed off some slick skating and eventually finished off his shift with a backhanded wraparound goal to put Team White up 1-0. The goal came at 4:22 of the first and was assisted by Sherwood Park, AB native and camp invite Tyler Robertson.
Evan Campbell tied the game for Team Blue at 9:05 of the first. The Oilers 2013 fifth-round pick shot the puck from the circle and it went in on the far side of goaltender Zach Nagelvoort. Campbell plays college hockey at UMass-Lowell, where he recorded 27 points (12-15-27) in 34 games as a sophomore this past season.
At 15:54 of the same period, a couple of Victoria Royals teammates hooked up for the lead. Oilers prospect Greg Chase found Tyler Soy in the slot for Team White’s go-ahead goal. White took the 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Just 49 ticks into the second period, Team White defenceman Darnell Nurse fired a shot off the far post and out.
Two goals came in quick succession just a few minutes later.
Oilers 2014 third-overall pick Leon Draisaitl made a nice move down the wing to skate past McDavid. The big German centre threw the puck in front of the net and camp invite Alexis Loiseau tapped it in for the game-tying goal at 4:26.
The two played against each other at the 2015 Memorial Cup, where Loiseau was captain of the Rimouski Oceanic.
15 seconds later, McDavid went one-on-one with goaltender Jordan Papirny in deep and showed off his skills with the puck, scoring his second goal of the game. Team White took the 3-2 lead.
At 9:26 of the second, Team Blue tied the game up courtesy of a rebound to the side of goaltender Miroslav Svoboda. Sherwood Park native Braden Christoffer shot the puck off the leg pad of Svoboda and Kyle Platzer was there to clean up the garbage. Joey LaLeggia earned the second assist on Platzer’s goal. Platzer led the 2014-15 Owen Sound Attack in scoring this season in the OHL with 81 points (34-47-81). He was a fourth-round pick of the Oilers in 2013.
Christoffer took a roughing penalty at 15:20 of the second to give Team White the first power play of the game. At 15:48, McDavid sent a pass inside that was originally thought to be deflected in by John McCarron. However, it trickled through and White took the 4-3 lead.
Connor Rankin scored late in the second to make it 5-3 White.
In the wide-open seven minute 3-on-3 period, following the second period, Ben Betker scored first for Team Blue. But McDavid scored twice more in the game’s final 1:30 to lead White to victory.
Chase, LaLeggia and Lane Bauer also scored in the 3-on-3 period.
