Sir Winston Churchill Square was rockin’ this weekend as the Edmonton Play On! Tournament took centre stage. Play On!, a 4-on-4 national street hockey tournament presented by CBC Hockey Night in Canada, will be played in 12 cities across Canada this summer. Over 1,500 players of all ages will compete in the Play On! tournaments in various age and skill levels.
Edmonton Oil Kings players took centre stage in the Celebrity Game on Saturday putting their hockey acumen to test against some of Edmonton’s finest. Edmonton Oil Kings forward Michael Burns helped his team scoring two back-to-back highlight reel goals.
“Coming to the tournament, I didn’t realize how big it was and what great turn out we’d have - it’s huge,” said Edmonton Oil Kings Michael Burns. “It’s nice to see everyone from kids to adults out there playing.”
The Edmonton Oilers staff also put together a team to defend their title in the Adult Co-Ed Intermediate stream. The Oilers team was led by Team Canada goalie Keely Brown and although they made it to the finals for the second consecutive year, they came up just short of securing the championship.
“The Oilers staff team want to thank Hockey Night in Canada and Play On! for the invitation to play, it’s a great event and we have a ton of fun here,” said Oilers staffer Matt McPhee. “It’s great to see 350 teams of all ages from across the province playing this weekend.”
