Entering the workplace after overcoming abuse or addiction is no easy task. Suit Yourself, an Edmonton based charitable organization, helps women who are making this transition by providing workplace clothing at no cost.
Suit Yourself was recently approached to do a coaching session for their clients. They jumped at this fantastic opportunity, as did Schoena Strudwick, co-owner of Yo Mama Maternity and wife of Jason Strudwick, when the Oilers Ladies were approached to speak at the session.
“It’s a really amazing organization and I’ve always had a soft spot for women’s causes,” said Schoena. “I grew up in humble beginnings and really wanted to share with these women the importance of rising above their challenges. I wanted them to know they’re not alone.”
When preparing for her presentation, Schoena realized the women might wonder what she has in common with them. Prepared to overcome these assumptions, Schoena spoke candidly about her life. Although she hasn’t been down the same path as some of the women, she’s faced challenges of her own.
“I told them my story; I told them how I learned that you need to fight and work hard in life,” said Schoena. “Everyone has challenges and everyone has a story, but it’s about finding a fulfilling life beyond material possessions. Even if one person walks away with a new perspective, I’ve done my job.”
Thirty women attended the seminar on Monday night which provided coaching to support their re-entry into the work place. Later this week the women will receive one-on-one coaching to focus on their individual goals.
“Schoena’s presentation was very well received,” said Karmen Masson, Founder of Suit Yourself. “She was very upfront and spoke from her heart; the women were touched that she came forward to participate.”
In addition to Schoena’s presentation, the Oilers Ladies on behalf of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation made a financial contribution and silent auction donation to Suit Yourself.
