Oilers dip into Shark tank on PPV

by Staff Writer / Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers wrap up a three-game road trip tonight in San Jose with their second meeting of the season against the Sharks.

Edmonton has picked up at least a point in each of its last four games with each of the last three going to overtime. The Oilers are in 10th in the Western Conference right now but are only a single point out of eighth spot as both the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild have 45 points.

Further up the ladder, the Oilers are five points back of Vancouver for first in the division and have a game in hand.

The Sharks started out this season on fire with a 20-7-0 record through their first 27 games but then faltered in December, going 7-7-0 in that month. They seem to be back on track now after hitting rock bottom with an 8-0 loss to Phoenix on December 30, winning three straight.

Tonight's game will be available on pay-per-view via Shaw Digital Cable, Star Choice and Bell Expressvu. If you don't have any of those three service providers you can still catch tonight's game at one of four participating Cineplex Odeon, Galaxy or Silver City theatres.

OILERS TO WATCH: Defenceman Tom Gilbert could make his NHL debut tonight after being recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on Tuesday. Gilbert had a goal and an assist in four pre-season games with the Oilers in September. In 33 games with Wilkes-Barre, Gilbert picked up 20 points and was +7... Jan Hejda has played his best hockey of the season since being recalled from Hamilton after Christmas. In the six games, Hejda has a goal and three assists. His first career NHL goal was the OT winner on Monday.

SHARKS TO WATCH: Joe Thornton is starting to look like the player he was last season when he won the league MVP and scoring title. In his past three games, Thornton has racked up 10 points... Ryane Clowe has five goals in his last two games. He had three goals in the previous 13 games before that... Patrick Marleau also has three goals and nine points on his current three-game scoring streak.

ROSTER UPDATES: Edmonton - Ethan Moreau (shoulder) is out. Ladislav Smid (shoulder) is out. Daniel Tjarnqvist (lower body) is doubtful. San Jose - Scott Parker (lower back) is out. Milan Michalek (groin) is questionable.

FAST FACTS: As the Oilers no doubt noticed the last time these two teams met, the Sharks have possibly the deadliest power play in the league. It is ranked number one in the NHL at home, on the road and overall. On home ice, it's particularly potent at 27.0%.
