The Edmonton Oilers have loaned defenceman Danny Syvret to Team Canada for the Spengler Cup tournament to be held in Davos, Switzerland from December 26th to 31st.
This will be the second consecutive season that Syvret has represented Canada at the Spengler Cup. One of four returnees from the 2006 Spengler Cup team, the 5’11”, 203-pound, 22-year-old native of Millgrove, Ontario helped Team Canada win the silver medal last season, falling 3-2 to the host team, HC Davos, in the gold medal final.
Syvret was also a member of Canada’s gold medal winning Junior National Team at the 2005 IIHF World Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Syvret, the Oilers’ third choice, 51st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, has scored a goal and three assists in 26 games with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League this season. He is +4 with six penalty minutes, scoring his lone goal on the powerplay.
Canada has appeared in six of the last seven championship games, winning the Spengler Cup in 2002 and 2003. Overall, Canada’s National Men’s Team has won the Spengler Cup 10 times (1984, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003) since first taking part in the tournament in 1984. The Spengler Cup, held annually since 1923, is the oldest professional international hockey tournament in the world.
Team Canada will open the 2007 Spengler Cup on December 26th against HC Moller Pardubice from the Czech Republic at 4:00 pm (MST). All of Canada’s games will be televised on Rogers Sportsnet.TEAM CANADA AT THE 2007 SPENGLER CUP
