"It's a tough injury to have. I knew there was going to be some growing pains coming back into the lineup and that's something I expected. I felt better last game and felt like I'm continuing to improve. I need to continue to get my legs under me, learn the system on the fly here and continue to get better and I feel like I'm doing that."
In his pre-game media availability, Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said that he needs to see more out of Gagner.
“With Gags, we need more out of Sam. Sam knows that. He’s feeling it, he wants to give more, he’s trying to find his way. But the hard reality of the game is when there’s others playing better than you in a game they’re going to start to end up with the minutes.
“I know Sam is really going to start to dig his heels and give us a strong performance.”
Gagner talked about adjusting to the system and his face guard.
"There's a lot that goes into it. Getting hurt in pre-season, regardless of a new coaching staff or not, is never fun. It's taken a little while to get back up to speed. And with the jaw and the protector there's going to be getting used to playing games (with the face guard)."
