Edmonton snapped a seven-game losing streak as they trumped New York in a 3-1 comeback victory.
A combination of Oilers strong offensive attack and aggressive but calculated defence kept the Islanders at bay.
“I think we could have gotten the puck to the net a little bit more,” said Islanders captain John Tavares.
“We had three or four opportunities, we had some chances, we probably could have shot the puck a little bit more. We did some good things — we just have to put it in the net when [we] get the chance.”
Outstanding goaltending by Oilers netminder Cam Talbot also prevented the Islanders from increasing their 1-0 lead. Talbot stopped 36 of their 37 shots.
“He was very good,” said Tavares. “You get your chances against him, you’ve got to beat the goalie — he played well.”
