Oilers GM Craig MacTavish talked to Oilers TV's Tom Gazzola about today's deals ( listen to it here). Here are some highlights:
On trading Dubnyk:
"We really felt for everybody it was time for a change with Devan. I think this change is really going to benefit Devan as well. I think it’s been tough on everybody, and that includes our goaltenders. It's a fresh start for Devan, which is important for him. He’s a guy who’s always been a consummate professional for us."
On acquiring Scrivens:
"It gives us an opportunity to bring in another goaltender, Ben Scrivens, who’s had statistically a very good season so far. It gives us an opportunity to have a pretty good look at him going forward to see where he could possibly fit in on a longer-term goaltending plan."
MacTavish also talked about how Scrivens stepped up earlier this season for the Kings.
"He really emerged when Jonathan Quick went down to injury the first time. Ben came in and played outstanding in relief of Jonathan. He was making a case for himself as a number one NHL goaltender in those starts that he had. that caught everybody’s attention and what’s given him this great opportunity."
The Oilers GM touched on Scrivens' previous relationship with head coach Dallas Eakins.
"He played very well for Dallas and he’s got a shot to come in here and really establish himself in the National Hockey League. It was important that Dallas gave him the thumbs up in terms of his relationship with Ben."
On adding Matt Hendricks:
"Matt Hendricks has a lot of leadership ability and we need more veteran presence really highlighted by how Andrew Ference has been for our hockey club as well as Boyd Gordon and now we add another guy that has really good leadership and compete level.
"He’s a good penalty killer. He takes face-offs during the penalty kill. He’s an excellent face-off guy. He can play up your lineup. He can play on your third line and definitely can play on your fourth line. He’s been playing right wing in Nashivllle. Our pro scouts have had an eye on him for quite some time."
