After watching the pre-season opener against the Calgary Flames from the press box at Rexall Place, Dallas Eakins will be on the bench, in game action, for the first time as Head Coach of the Oilers, tonight.
It will be an exciting time for Eakins to finally step onto the bench as a NHL head coach.
“I guess I haven’t had time to think about it,” said Eakins. “I’m sure it will be. Especially going into a place that I’ve played before. I’m sure I will be excited. But I will be very honest with you, there’s been so much going on that I haven’t really thought of it.
“Way to go. You just planted the nervous seed in me.”
Nerves aside, Eakins expects to slide into his role as a very vocal coach and explains what type of coach he is on the bench.
“I’m certainly not silent. I think I’ve got a fairly loud voice and I am vocal. I try not to get too vocal where I distract the players.
“I think the players are always feeding off the head coach. There’s probably some times where I want to yell but I’ll bite my toungue because I think maybe I’m going to send them too far into frenzy.
“My assistant coaches have free reign. I’ve asked them to be the positive ones. Minor corrections that are not a big deal, they can handle. Big ones, if I didn’t see it, whisper in my ear and I’ll handle all of the heavy lifting. That’s my job.”
