Oil Country, the last little bit of summer has definitely been an Octane filled one! Your Oilers Octane has been very busy bonding with all the beautiful ladies we welcomed to the 2012-2013 team. As well as preparing to see y’all next by practicing new routines twice per week. We have almost 15 brand new dances that we are very excited to show you!! But that is not all. We have also been very busy in the community at various events, and with looking at September’s event schedule, it does not look like it will slow down at all! Check out what we have been up to below!

CISN Country Community Classic Golf Tournament

On August 27th, I was invited to be auctioned off to golf alongside Jack Greenly in support of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. This was the second year that the EOCF was the beneficiary of the CISN Country golf tournament, to which I was thrilled to become a part of the longstanding partnership the two organizations have, as well as to assist with fundraising efforts.

Within the first couple of hours that the auction item became available, a bid of $800.00 was offered. In speaking with my dad about how astonished I was that someone would pay that much, he asked me “When was the last time you went golfing?” … I really had to stop and think about this. My reply was “That time that you, Grandpa and I went out” my dad roared with laughter, as the time I was recalling was when I was 15. “Better hit the driving range then”

Just before the auction closed on our lot, I was invited to join Jack and Sean on the CISN Country morning show to see if we couldn’t challenge the generous people of Oil Country to bid higher. And that is just what they did! Glen Martin from Drayton Valley secured the auction item with a winning bid of $1,500.00!!

The day of the tournament came along, and upon hearing that it was a Texas Scramble , I fully relaxed and had an amazing time! Thank you again to Glen for his generous donation to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.

Oilers Themed Baggage Carousel

December of 2010 was the last time that I had flown out internationally from the Edmonton International Airport, and after seeing the new expansion on September 15th, I cannot wait to take another fight!

Edmonton Airports unveiled not only a new wing, but a new baggage carousel that is Oilers themed too!

The new expansion comes at a great time, since over the last 12 months, EIA has seen more than 6.5 million people walk through its doors, which makes it the fastest growing major airport in Canada. With 4 new dining outlets and 5 new retail outlets, it created more than a 1,000 jobs for the capital region. PLUS! The addition of the new carousel in the baggage international arrival hall adorned with an Oilers display. The other two carousels in the hall are Oil Kings and Eskimos themed and quite stunning! All three display Edmonton’s rich history with sports. And will make waiting for your bags to arrive a little less ordinary, something that I cannot wait to hear from Oilers Season Seat Holder Ron Erickson ( who flies in from Oklahoma City for every Oilers game) about what he thinks!

First Aid Class

The Oilers Octane were fortunate enough to have a very exciting sponsor this year. St John Ambulance offered a Standard Level C, First Aid and CPR class for the Octane members.

St John Ambulance has a rich history not only internationally, but here in Alberta as well. Providing first aid services since 1883, where it trained about 100 people per year. Edmonton is the busiest center in Canada having trained more than 10,000 people province wide this year alone!

The ladies learned how to recognize and provide interventions for life-threatening emergencies until medical aid arrives. Which included CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, shock and unconsciousness, severe bleeding, head & spinal injuries, major medical conditions, fractures of the upper and lower limbs,  and AED training and certification.

Although in Rexall Place, there are not only members of EMS on site and St John Ambulance Medical First Responders that will respond to emergency situations primarily, Octane members could easily apply the knowledge they obtained on the course at promotional events, at home, at school and at work.

Having first aid training could mean the difference between a life saved and a life lost. Thank you again to St John Ambulance for being an incredible sponsor!

Stay tuned Oil Country to hear about what we've been up to next!
