WHL's Portland Winter Hawks sold to Calgary businessman Bill Gallacher @NHLdotcom

CALGARY - The Western Hockey League has approved the sale of the Portland Winter Hawks to Bill Gallacher.

Gallacher is based in Calgary and is a director of the energy investment company Avenir Capital Corporation.

A condition of sale of the franchise was that the team had to remain in Portland and Gallacher is not scheduled to take control of the team until the sale is concluded later this month, the WHL said Wednesday in a statement.

The Winter Hawks have been in Portland, Ore., since 1976.

The WHL also announced Wednesday the league will begin random drug testing of WHL players starting in November. The WHL and Ontario Hockey League have begun anti-doping programs this season, while the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is in its third season of drug testing.
