WHL's Kamloops Blazers fire coach following losing streak @NHLdotcom

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The Western Hockey League's Kamloops Blazers have fired head coach Barry Smith.

The Blazers are one of the top-ranked junior hockey teams in Canada but have just returned from an Eastern conference road trip where they posted a dismal 1-and-5 record.

In most of the those games, the three-time Memorial Cup-winning team was outshot by a wide margin.

During the trip the team also fell from first to fourth in the WHL Western conference.

General Manager Craug Bonner says he cannot tolerate being an average team at this point in the season.

Smith was in his second year with the team and his head coaching duties will now be taken over, on an interim basis, by assistant coach Scott Ferguson.
